Salem Printing, Winston Salem, North Carolina, installed a six-color MAN Roland R300 with coater. The commercial, financial, and packaging printer purchased the press to keep up with its rapid growth and to meet the increasingly stringent quality demands of its customers. "We have doubled our size each year for the last two years, and we had to have more productivity to keep up with our growth," observes Philip Kelley, vice president of Salem Printing. "The Roland 300 gives us the ultimate level of print quality, color control, and speed." The MAN Roland R300 can print up to six colors and apply aqueous coating on sheets up to 23 x 29 inches. Its 15,000 sph operating speed, both in straight or perfecting mode, gives Salem Printing a significant boost in productivity over its other presses. Kelley particularly likes that the R300's 23 x 29-inch sheet size provides a substantial boost over smaller, 19 x 25-inch presses. For example, two six-page, 8-1/2 x 11-inch brochures can be printed per sheet compared to one-up on the smaller sheet. That's a 100 percent increase in productivity. "Plus, the Roland R300 offers computerized color control with a scanning densitometer linked to the ink keys that gives us precision control of color and shortens make-ready times," Kelley says. Salem Printing is able to further boost its productivity by aqueous coating in one pass. "On my four- and five-color presses, I'd have to run a six-color job through four times and let it dry overnight," says Kelley. "The Roland R300 does the whole thing is one pass. We expect this to significantly improve our throughput."
