Adobe Defines its Vision for the Third Wave of Publishing

Press release from the issuing company

San Jose, Calif. - Making visually rich, personalized content available anytime, anywhere on any device is the vision Adobe Systems Incorporated unveiled today for the next era of publishing. During a press conference at the Tech Museum of Innovation, the leader in Web, print and dynamic media publishing software defined this new category as Network Publishing. The company articulated how it would fuel its success and that of the entire publishing industry through new technologies, services and strategic partnerships. To help build the category, Adobe announced support from Art Technology Group ("ATG"), HP, Interwoven, Nokia, and RealNetworks. "Network Publishing will dramatically change the way content is created, managed, and delivered," said Bruce Chizen, president of Adobe. "Leveraging the Internet, Network Publishing represents the third wave of publishing-following desktop and traditional Web publishing. It's the era of creating visually rich, meaningful content that is managed and delivered reliably wherever the user wants, whether it's a Web page, printer, cell phone, handheld device, PC or Internet appliance." In the new world of Network Publishing, content will be created once by an individual or groups and presented exactly as intended regardless of device. The consumer will enjoy the convenience of viewing that content anywhere, and if desired, storing, forwarding or printing it to another destination. Adobe's role in Network Publishing is to continue to evolve, integrate and extend its award-winning software that creates visually rich content, including AdobeÆ PhotoshopÆ, Adobe AcrobatÆ, Adobe IllustratorÆ, Adobe InDesignÅ, Adobe FrameMakerÆ, Adobe PremiereÆ, Adobe After EffectsÆ, Adobe LiveMotionÅ and Adobe GoLiveÆ. Content created with Adobe software will be meta-tagged for management, distribution and display. Adobe will continue to champion industry standards on which Network Publishing is based, such as the Extensible Markup Language (XML), the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF), Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), Synchronized Multimedia Integrated Language (SMIL), Wireless Markup Language (WML) for WAP devices and the Compact HyperText Markup Language (cHTML) for i-mode. "Users are beginning to expect publishing applications and processes to create and re-purpose content anywhere, anytime to meet specific information needs. Stove-piped workflows are quickly becoming obsolete," said Rita Knox, vice president and research director, Gartner. "The Web is raising our expectations for content flexibility. Content and presentation must be synthesized or brought together at the latest possible moment when the consumer requests information. The emergence of this type of processing intelligence on the Web will be the hallmark of an entirely new class of applications." Adobe garnered support for the Network Publishing vision from industry-leading companies. Senior executives from ATG, HP, Interwoven, Nokia, and RealNetworks discussed their companies' role in Network Publishing. Paul Shorthose, president and COO of ATG, and Martin Brauns, president and CEO of Interwoven announced their companies' alliance with Adobe to streamline enterprise Web workflows from content creation to management to delivery (see separate release). Carolyn Ticknor, president of HP's Imaging and Printing Systems business, discussed how Network Publishing is further evidence of HP's vision of information appliances connecting to a Web of Internet-based services running on an always-on infrastructure. Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president of Nokia, discussed how content will be published to any device, ultimately making all information accessible anywhere (see separate release). Rob Glaser, president and CEO of RealNetworks, announced a strategic alliance with Adobe to develop enhanced streaming media solutions to deliver on the rich media capabilities that increasing bandwidth and broadband will enable (see separate release).
