Xerox Introduces Color Printer Four Times Faster Than Competition

Press release from the issuing company

WILSONVILLE, Ore., In line with a turnaround plan that has color at its core, Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) today took the wraps off its newest office color printer featuring "single-pass" technology that is up to four times faster than traditional color lasers from competitors. The new Xerox Phaser 1235 network color printer, with an estimated retail price (ERP) of $3,599, pumps out high-quality color at 12 pages per minute (ppm) - a speed normally available only in black-and-white. The breakthrough is made possible through an advanced engine design that allows the printer to transfer a full color image to the paper in a "single pass," using LED (light emitting diode) technology. Most office color printers require four passes - one for each color - to produce a color document. "The Xerox Phaser 1235 raises the performance bar for desktop color laser printing," said Alyson Frasco, director, Worldwide Printer Research, IDC. "It represents another step toward moving the network office from black-and-white to color printing." In addition, Xerox cemented its commitment to the graphic arts market with the new Phaser 790 tabloid color laser printer, a replacement for the industry-leading Phaser 780. The Phaser 790 offers 50 percent faster print speeds and 30 percent faster processing time than its predecessor. It also delivers superior print quality, two-sided printing, and the most versatile color management tools in its class. The Phaser 790, with an ERP of $6,199, prints 6 ppm in color and 26 ppm in black-and-white. "With these new products, Xerox continues to lead the industry with state-of-the-art color technology that benefits every business environment, from medium and large workgroups to the more specific needs of the graphics professional," said Gerry Perkel, president, Xerox Office Printing Business. The Phaser 1235 and Phaser 790 are the latest in a series of nine new products launched this year by the company's Office Printing Business, formed from Xerox's acquisition of the Tektronix color printing business. Over the past nine months, Xerox has completely refreshed its line of color and monochrome network office printers. Xerox also has maintained its position as Hewlett-Packard's single strongest competitor in office color printing, with about 30 percent marketshare. The company has steadily increased its focus on selling through indirect channels including resellers, dealers, catalogers and the Internet. As part of its indirect sales strategy, Xerox also recently moved its North American Agent channel into the Office Printing Business, reflecting the increased role of Xerox agents. The Xerox agent channel has about 750 independent agencies across North America that sell Xerox products to small and medium-sized businesses. Xerox last week announced an aggressive corporate turnaround plan that emphasizes the importance of maintaining its color market leadership and expanding its indirect channels capability. In the third quarter, Xerox color revenue advanced 74 percent over a year ago, reflecting the strength of the company's full color family, including the Phaser line. Both the Phaser 1235 and Phaser 790 are available immediately through resellers, dealers and agents in North America and Europe.
