Weyerhaeuser Names Michael Thompson to Oversee Asian Offices

Richard E. Hanson to Assume Additional International Responsibilities FEDERAL WAY, Wash.--June 28, 2002--Weyerhaeuser Company today announced that Michael K. Thompson will assume the position of president, Weyerhaeuser Asia Ltd., effective Jan. 1, 2003. He succeeds H. James Fitzgerald who will return to the United States at the end of the year and retire from Weyerhaeuser early next year. Thompson will report to Richard E. Hanson, executive vice president, Timberlands, who assumes additional international responsibilities. Effective July 1, with the exception of Trus Joist, Weyerhaeuser's engineered lumber business, Hanson will lead all Weyerhaeuser operations in the Southern Hemisphere, Weyerhaeuser Asia Ltd., and the company's European Composite Panels business. Hanson will continue to report to Steven R. Rogel, chairman, president and chief executive officer. Thompson, who began his career with Trus Joist 30 years ago, was general manager of Trus Joist's Northwest Division prior to moving to Japan in 1997. He has worked in Weyerhaeuser's Tokyo office since Weyerhaeuser acquired Trus Joist in January 2000. In his new position, Thompson will oversee the Weyerhaeuser offices in Japan, Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore. He will work with Fitzgerald in a transitional role through the end of the year. Fitzgerald has served as president of Weyerhaeuser Asia Ltd. since 1996. Prior to that, he spent 22 years with Quadrant Corp., Weyerhaeuser's home-building operation in Washington.
