West Caldwell, NJ – PRINT 17 was a lucrative event for Colter & Peterson. The two new paper cutters and new CHM 1700 precision sheeter that were demonstrated last week at McCormick Place were sold at the show, and are either in route or being installed at their new homes. 

“It was a very good show and it may have been better if not for the travel woes due to the hurricane in Florida and Georgia, and the impact caused by Hurricane Harvey that kept people home in Texas,” said Bruce Peterson, President of C&P. “A New York company bought the 45-inch SABER®, an Illinois printer purchased the 31.5-inch PRISM®, and we are shipping the CHM 1700 sheeter to a customer’s manufacturing facility in Los Angeles."

With its sleek design, new technology and Siemens electronics, the CHM 1700 dual rotary knife sheeter was demonstrated often throughout the five-day show in the Shanghai Eureka booth not far from C&P’s space. Having the smallest footprint of comparative sized machines in its class, Peterson said visitors were impressed with its high accuracy and the productivity boost it provides, from fast make-readies to quicker transition from paper to board.

“The CHM 1700 is ideal for any shop that is running a minimum of three presses. That’s all it takes to justify the purchase because it reduces paper costs up to 15 percent,” explained Peterson. “By cutting paper rolls on demand, it reduces the expense of warehousing space and allows paper to be sheeted to size, thereby reducing waste. By eliminating skids of paper sitting around for a period of time, the problems caused by humidity, paper curling and temperature change go away. This allows presses to run faster. Add it all together and the CHM 1700 basically pays for itself.”

Peterson said several visitors expressed interest in the CHM 1700 and those dialogues are on-going. He mentioned a national converting customer is having success with C&P paper cutters operating at its facilities in the Midwest and the Southeast, one reason why they bought the precision sheeter off the floor at McCormick Place.

The new SABER 45-inch and PRISM 31.5-inch paper cutters were both run with the Microcut® PLUS Cutter Control System. The ability to increase production 50 percent or more, coupled with operator friendly touchscreen controls, new software and an enhanced, color coordinated graphics package for converted JDF files with Microcut, were the right enticements for their new owners.

“SABER and PRISM are our premier lines. People were impressed when they saw the SABER in action with the automated knife adjustment,” said Peterson. “It’s a real workhorse and it is very evident when you see it in person, especially for those who want to cut different substrate types. The PRISM always gets high marks for its accuracy, and the small footprint is really appealing to smaller shops where space is a major consideration.”

Colter & Peterson also introduced a prototype model of the new PRISM® E-Cut series.

“The PRISM E-Cut measures 26 inches and will be the most economical line of paper cutters in the market for its size,” said Peterson, who indicated he received good feedback at the show. He plans to review those comments and expects to make some adjustments to the machine before this series is offered to the market in 2018.
