Goss New Uniliner S 4x1 Format Newspaper Press System Ordered

Press release from the issuing company

The Border Morning Mail, New South Wales, Australia Nantes, France (May 28th 2002) – Goss International Corporation simultaneously announces the new 70,000 cph Goss Uniliner ‘S’ 4x1 newspaper press system, and the first customer for this innovative press, The Border Morning Mail Limited, headquartered at Wodonga, Victoria, Australia. The new Goss Uniliner ‘S’ single circumference plate, double circumference blanket newspaper press to be installed at The Border Morning Mail’s recently built Wodonga facility, will produce The Border Mail daily newspaper for the Albury and Wodonga region of New South Wales, plus other commercially produced cold-set products. The Border Mail will become a world reference center for the Goss Uniliner ‘S’ press system following its installation in 2003. According to Border Morning Mail Chief Executive Tony Whiting, "Goss’ proposal for the Uniliner ‘S’ was outstanding and provides a real win-win situation for both the purchaser and the vendor. This will see a quantum leap in quality and cost efficiency for both The Border Mail and all our print customers. This significant investment coincides with the company’s Centenary and underlines the long-term confidence we have in both our publishing and printing business". The Border Mail, which carries the masthead slogan ‘a new world every day’, was first published in 1903 and is still owned by the Mott family. For the last two years it has won the prestigious PANPA Newspaper of the Year ward for its category, using its Goss single width presses. Rob Lappin, Border Morning Mail Production Manager comments, "The capacity and flexibility of the Uniliner ‘S’ will be a huge benefit to our print clients. Commercial printing has become an important revenue stream for The Border Mail. I firmly believe the future of quality cold-set printing lies with double width, single circumference presses." The Uniliner ‘S’ is a single-around plate cylinder, straight production version of the existing Uniliner press family – the Uniliner press range has already taken orders in Europe as well as America. This new ‘S’ version – the ‘S’ stands for ‘straight’ production – is launched in 2002 and is specifically targeted at higher volume production of non-collect newspaper products. As such, it is ideally suited to the Australian production needs of The Border Mail. The technology of the Uniliner ‘S’ will provide excellent reproduction and the flexible capacity to increase pagination by four-page increments – a description of the strategic positioning for the Goss Uniliner ‘S’ press system concludes this release. The Uniliner ‘S’ order for The Border Mail consists of four shaftless four-high towers with open fountain inkers and a 2:3:3 jaw folder with a quarter fold attachment and a stitcher. Additionally the press includes six two-arm reelstands and a high specification Goss OCPS press control system with three dual-purpose quality and press control desks. Press features giving enhanced operational efficiency include the pre-settability of ink keys with a ‘self learning’ capability from Border Mail RIP data, plus a full, remote ISDN/Internet diagnostics link with Europe for optimum communication and service. With a Border Morning Mail production capacity of 96 pages tabloid in total, up to 64 pages can be in 4-color, depending on pagination. Border Morning Mail newspaper products include the flagship Border Mail with a Monday to Saturday average circulation of around 27,000 copies and a large range of short to medium run contract newspapers. In future around 60% more 4-color will be available for The Border Mail, benefiting both advertisers and editorial. Provision is made for the future addition of up to 3 further four-high towers, plus a second jaw folder, when required. Peter Kirwan, Goss Vice President, Asia Pacific describes the importance of The Border Mail order for the Australian and world markets as follows, "The Uniliner ‘S’ is a great press for publishers and printers such as The Border Mail. The reproduction quality and flexibility of this press, matched with its speed of 70,000 copies per hour, makes it extremely cost efficient. The Border Mail commitment to quality cold-set printing is the ideal opportunity to promote the Goss Uniliner ‘S’ to a world-wide market." Eric Normand, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Goss Systèmes Graphique, Nantes indicates that, "The Border Mail conducted an exhaustive analysis of our Uniliner ‘S’ versus the products of all our competitors. They compared technical specifications, visited vendor facilities and most importantly met with other customers to see how well Goss achieved its promises. We are very proud that they chose Goss, which is a strong sign of how confident the market is in our European technology and our capabilities." In conclusion Dick Schultz, Goss Senior Vice President, Global Sales summarizes, "We anticipate that this first Uniliner ‘S’ order will be followed by many others. This new eight-page press system is ideally positioned between our Universal 50 four-page press and the ‘top-of-the-range’ Colorliner 80 sixteen-page press – surely the strongest newspaper press product range in the world now."
