GPO Official History Chosen as a Notable Document for 2016

Press release from the issuing company

Washington – The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) official history, Keeping America Informed / The U.S. Government Publishing Office / A Legacy of Service to the Nation 1861-2016(Washington:  GPO, rev. ed., 2016), has been chosen as a Notable Document for 2016.  The selection was made by the Notable Documents Panel of the American Library Association’s Government Documents Round Table, which selects documents issued at the state, Federal, and international levels to “recognize excellence in government publications, identify documents of distinction, and commend individual works of superlative nature.” The selection was announced in the May 17, 2017, issue of Library Journal, and published online at http://reviews.libraryjournal.com/2017/05/reference/research-at-risk-notable-government-documents-2016/

In selecting the 2016 edition of Keeping America Informed as a Notable Document, the Panel said, “This revised edition celebrates the 155th anniversary of the Government Publishing Office (GPO) and recognizes its ongoing and successful use of digital technologies in meeting the rapidly changing information needs of U.S. citizens. With engaging narratives from the past and images from GPO’s extensive photographic library, this chronicle beautifully records the agency’s history and vital ¬service.”

The original edition, Keeping America Informed / The U.S. Government Printing Office / 150 Years of Service to the Nation (Washington: GPO, 2011), was previously chosen as a Notable Document in 2011. At that time, the Panel said, “Liberally illustrated with historical photographs and facsimiles of famous government documents, this volume will appeal to a wider audience than depository librarians. Historians and history buffs who have an interest in government and how it interacts with both the private sector and public employee unions will find a compelling story that focuses on the Federal Government’s obligation to keep citizens informed about its activities” (http://www.ala.org/awardsgrants/notable-government-documents).

Both volumes are available from GPO, in print, ePub, and eBook formats, at https://bookstore.gpo.gov/search/apachesolr_search/keeping%20America%20Informed

and from GPO’s bookstore at 710 North Capitol Street, NW, Washington, DC 20401.
