MIAMISBURG, Ohio, Aug. 6 -- NewPage Corporation announced today that Futura Laser(R), a premium No.1 coated paper for digital applications, is now Forest Stewardship Council(C) (FSC) chain-of-custody certified (SW-COC-001930). FSC is an international, nonprofit organization that develops standards for responsible forest management, and accredits independent third-party organizations to certify forest managers and forest product producers to these standards.

Futura Laser is also third-party chain-of-custody certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative(R) (SFI) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) schemes.

"Having an FSC chain-of-custody certified offering in the premium digital papers line gives end users, paper specifiers and printers more paper options on which to image, using the most environmentally sound combinations of technology, media and equipment," says Michelle Garrett, NewPage marketing strategy manager for digital papers. "Imaging companies now have the choice of employing ultra low emissions emitting printing equipment, chain-of-custody certified media and efficient work flow technologies to produce the highest quality direct mail and marketing collateral. The result is little or no printing waste, less obsolete printed material on the shelves, quicker time to market and greater return rates, ultimately resulting in less discarded mail entering the waste stream."

"Chain-of-custody" is the traceable path logs take from the forest, through the pulp manufacturing process, to the paper mill, all the way through to the certified product sold to an end user. Compliance with this standard means that NewPage is established and engaged in "best practices" to obtain wood and pulp from legal sources while avoiding wood from areas where human rights have been violated, from high conservation value forests, from plantations that have been converted from natural forests, and from genetically modified trees. Chain-of-custody must be in place at all steps along the supply chain in order for a Futura Laser printed label or package to carry an FSC chain-of-custody label.

As of August 1, 2008, Futura Laser originating from NewPage warehouses is FSC certified and will include the appropriate FSC documentation.
