New Web Tool to Allow General Public to Watch Domtar's Moves

Press release from the issuing company

Quebec, These were the terms used by Mr. Gildas Minville, Vice-President Forest Operations-Quebec Domtar Forest Resources Division, at a press conference held this morning at QuÈbec City's MusÈe de la Civilisation, where he presented a new Web-based tool. "Following through on the brief we presented before the National Assembly parliamentary committee studying Bill 136, which proposes to revise the province's forest act, it is important to grasp that Domtar firmly believes it is in fact possible to reassure the public and reconcile the interests of other forest users, while also enabling our company to maintain its competitive position worldwide. In our view, public confidence in forest management, along with harmony among various users, safeguard our access to the forest and, necessarily, our future as a company," noted Mr. Minville. For Domtar, the company's development rests on the quality of its relations with all its partners. During its presentation before the parliamentary committee, Domtar pledged not only to consult but also to involve other forest users in the process of preparing its management plans, and to provide updates to them on an annual basis. To make this dialogue a reality, it was necessary to acquire a dynamic, accessible tool. Thus, Domtar today is happy to launch a new Web tool that will be used to establish and facilitate maintaining harmonious relations with all its neighbours. "We are presenting a new Web-based tool that will provide all users as well as the general public with access to the company's forest management plans (general, annual and five-year) in the Abitibi region. They will have the opportunity to ask questions and air their comments. Domtar is planning on extending this application to all the forests it manages in North America within a year's time," asserted Mister Minville. The new Website tool developed by Domtar uses the Internet application known as ArcIMS (Internet Map Server), which allows users to interactively consult the forest management plans under the responsibility of Domtar's Forest Resources Division. This application is a communications tool serving to personalize the maps used by Domtar and to view them according to various themes: harvest planning; planting and thinning (planning); logging roads; land use; trapping areas, etc.
