Chapelton underlines benefits of using approved non-harmful grease resistant packaging

Press release from the issuing company

Kent-based speciality paper and cartonboard supplier, Chapelton, has underlined the high environmental benefits of using non-harmful chemical free grease resistant packaging. In particular seeking advice from knowledgeable distributors, merchants and manufacturers, following recent press reports about the safety of some harmful chemicals that are being used in takeaway packaging.

Chapelton raised the subject following recent press items concerning harmful chemicals that are being used in some takeaway packaging materials, which prevent the grease content of the food compromising the packaging. According to the reports, the US authorities have banned those chemicals that are being used in some takeaway boxes as they may be harmful to consumer’s health.

The compounds at the centre of the scare are perfluoroalkyl ethyl, also known as perfluorochemicals (PFCs), with US authorities proposing to amend their food additive regulations to no longer provide for their usage when in contact with aqueous and fatty foods.

Commenting on the subject, Chapelton Managing Director, Neil Skelton, stated, “It is essential that companies seek advice on which products are safe, and approved by the food safety regulatory authorities for use in food packaging applications and processes. By seeking out knowledgeable suppliers, such as ourselves, we can help advise and work in liaison with them to find the most suitable, sustainable and safe solution to use.”

One of the products highlighted by Chapelton as being a preferred alternative, and particularly suitable for food packaging, is Smurfit Kappa’s Grease Guard folding carton board, which has been specifically designed for packaging that is in direct contact with all food types. It is also recyclable, biodegradable and compostable, and can be used as an alternative to virgin fibre board with PE lamination.

Being recyclable as a mono material, and as its production content originates from Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified sources, the FSC® Chain of Custody is maintained with Grease Guard Food.

One of the other relevant advantages is that Smurfit Kappa’s innovative migration barrier, MB 12, can be added to the Grease Guard range for protection against organic and sensory migrants.

Renowned for high quality products, innovative materials and outstanding customer service, Chapelton are a leading independent paper and board supplier, servicing the UK and Irish print and packaging sectors and dealing with many of the major global paper and board manufacturers.

With a 31-year trading history and operating from a facility in Aylesford, Kent, Chapelton is a privately-owned company. Chapelton employs a team of experienced personnel to deal with its international manufacturing clients, and handle the array of cartonboard, paper and speciality products that it stocks.
