International Paper to Present New Lightweight Cartonboard Alaska Plus at ‘Packaging Innovations 2015’ in London

Press release from the issuing company

Belgium and United Kingdom – International Paper, a leading global packaging and paper company, will be presenting its cartonboard products Alaska Plus and Arktika at this year’s Packaging Innovations exhibition. This year’s ‘Packaging Innovations’ will be held at London’s Olympia on September 16-17, with International Paper on stand F32.

Alaska Plus is a drastically lighter weight GC2 product that combines excellent product performance in packaging production and packing process with a notably lower weight. It is designed for pharmaceutical, healthcare and beauty packaging, as well as chocolate and dry-food applications. Using the latest technology in cartonboard manufacturing, International Paper has been able to lower the basis weight of its GC2 board by 5%–7%, while keeping all other technical parameters stable. High stiffness and bulk ensure strength of the packaging in transport, on the shelf and in use.

International Paper’s Commercial Director for Coated Paperboard and Recycled Specialties, Michael Krüger stated, “Since its launch last year, packaging converters and brand-owners across Europe have shown great interest in Alaska Plus and the environmental advantages, as well as the economic benefits the product offers.”

As an endorsement of its capabilities, Alaska Plus was a recent recipient of ‘The European Medal’, a Poland-wide initiative organized by the Business Centre Club and supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the Honorary Patronage of the European Economic and Social Committee based in Brussels since 2000. Alaska Plus was recognized specifically for enabling a notable reduction in packaging weight. Other environmental benefits include fewer resources being used, lower transport weights and an overall reduction in waste.

Next to Alaska Plus, the company will also be presenting their leading GC1 product Arktika. It is a high quality fully coated Folding Boxboard product with a coated reverse side. Arktika is aimed at the end user segments of cosmetics, pharmaceutical, greetings cards, publishing and commercial printing, along with higher quality packaging and graphical applications.

With a double coating on the top side, allowing for excellent surface characteristics, Arktika provides an uncompromised quality finish for the most intricate of creative designs. Demanding elements can also be printed on the reverse side thanks to its one layer of coating.

Made at International Paper’s Kwidzyn mill in Poland, both Alaska Plus and Arktika are produced only from virgin fibre to ensure a consistent quality of the board, with all fibre originating from sustainably managed forests, and both the Alaska Plus and the Arktika products are available as FSC® or PEFC certified. In addition, the products are ISEGA certified allowing for dry and fatty food applications, and also PTS/FFPI certificated for inkjet and laser coding on pharmaceutical packaging.
