Paper, Wood Products Manufacturers Disagree with Sens. Markey and Warren Attack on Biomass

Press release from the issuing company

WASHINGTON – American Forest & Paper Association President and CEO Donna Harman has issued the following statement on the letter Sens. Markey and Warren sent to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today calling for a ban on biomass as a compliance option for the president’s Climate Action Plan.

“Biomass, and particularly our industry’s use of manufacturing residuals, is strongly supported by numerous scientific and technical studies as contributing positively to a low-carbon future. EPA has already stated they have more than enough information and data to justify inclusion of energy from biomass as a renewable energy source in their Clean Power Plan. Failure to recognize the positive contribution of biomass energy ignores the natural carbon cycle of release and sequestration that occurs when trees are planted, grown, used and then new trees are replanted.”
