I'm always on the lookout resources that can explain what's happened in plain language, and one of the best free resources is by Scott Brinker. His website is chiefmartec.com. The site's name is based on a new function in the discipline of marketing, Chief Marketing Technologist. His 40 page report, A New Brand of Marketing, was released in 2014, is highly recommended, and a free download (PDF).
