DUSSELDORF, Germany--May 5, 2004-- Extending its latest modular technology platform to a broader base of customers in the printing industry, Xerox Corporation is launching two new digital systems that come closer to offset image quality than any other black-and-white digital production system on the market. The Xerox Nuvera 100 and 120 Digital Production Systems are engineered to produce a whole new range of print jobs including many previously reserved for offset. The systems bring the digital advantages of fast turnarounds, economical short runs, personalized printing and integration with the Web to commercial printing and in-plant printing operations. Signifying the differentiation in the platform from any other black-and-white digital offering in the market today, Xerox is launching the Nuvera name along with the new products at drupa 2004, the quadrennial international printing trade show. "The Nuvera line takes digital printing to the next level, offering a no-excuse complement to offset image quality," said Gil Hatch, president, Xerox Production Systems Group. "The new name - 'Nuvera' - reinforces that these products are based on new technology, and the new realities of digital printing. No other digital system in the industry handles print jobs as efficiently, offers such outstanding image quality, or provides as much black-and-white revenue opportunity and productivity." The Nuvera 100 and 120 Digital Production Systems address the full range of work produced in commercial and quick print shops and in corporate reprographic departments. Designed for high-volume production printing - with average monthly recommended page volumes from 100,000 to 1.5 million pages, and duty cycles ranging to as high as 3.5 million - they print on both coated and uncoated stocks, and offer a new halftone density of up to 156 lines per inch (lpi), which provides the high-quality imaging. "Introducing a high-level production version of the new Xerox black-and-white platform is an excellent move for the graphic arts market," said Andy Tribute of Attributes Associates, an internationally known industry analyst and writer. "The systems will open up new applications with their high-image quality and wide range of coated and uncoated stocks, and since they are built on a brand-new platform, the new name 'Nuvera' differentiates the products from the long established, very successful DocuTech line." The Nuvera 100 prints as many as 100 pages per minute and the Nuvera 120 prints 120 ppm. Both systems are available as print-only devices, or with a choice of a centralized or distributed scanning workflow. The systems can be ordered with an integrated 120 page-per-minute scanner, the fastest, highest quality scanner on the market that can scan both front and back at 600 x 600 dots-per-inch, or with the new remote FreeFlow Scanner 665 also announced today. The FreeFlow Scanner 665 scans as fast as 65 ppm with an automatic image enhancement capability that virtually eliminates the need to edit scanned images. SmartPress Technologies Several of the Nuvera systems' key offset-like advances derive from SmartPress technologies developed for the flagship Xerox DocuColor iGen3 Digital Production Press. SmartPress paper-handling technologies deliver the wide media latitude. The systems come with four standard trays and four optional trays, as well as an optional four-tray insertion module for a total capacity of 17,280 sheets. Patented "non-contact" SmartPress imaging technology delivers the benchmark image quality, with the SmartPress Sentry system continuously monitoring and adjusting image quality to improve performance and reliability. Print resolution is 4800 x 600 dpi; and screens range from 85 to 156 lpi, including a 134-lpi setting that meets the typical offset job specification for 130 lpi or greater. Operators can choose from widely used publishing data streams, such as Adobe PostScript Level 3, PDF and multi-page TIFF. In addition, the Xerox DocuSP controller provides a common operator interface allowing for local and remote printing on any of the 32 DocuSP-driven Xerox production printers. The Nuvera Digital Production Systems have a wide range of finishing options including stacking, stapling, booklet making, hole punch and thermal binding. An integrated read/write CD drive provides automatic CD archiving of production jobs as part of the printing process and lets people print jobs directly from CDs. At the lower-volume mid-production market, and built on the same breakthrough technology platform, the DocuTech 100 and 120 copier/printer products introduced in January also join the Nuvera family and now will be known as the Nuvera 100 and 120 Digital Copier/Printers. Pricing and Availability The Nuvera 100 and 120 Digital Production Systems are available for order-taking beginning July 15 with customer installation in August, through Xerox direct sales representatives, agents and concessionaires. Prices in the U.S. are $177,000 for the Nuvera 100 and $217,000 for the Nuvera 120.
