C.P. Bourg Introduces Highly Versatile Sheet Feeder for HP Indigo and Other "Right to Left" Workflows

Press release from the issuing company

New 'mirror-image' sheet feeding option will be shown at Graph Expo 2014 operating with the HP Indigo 7800 Digital Press in the HP booth #1913.

Addition of left-exit Bourg Sheet Feeder brings C.P. Bourg’s unique finishing functionality to a broader range of digital presses and finishers.

McCormick Place, Chicago - The benefits of C.P. Bourg's unique "dual-mode" in-line and off-line finishing functionality are now available to users of HP Indigo digital presses and other equipment with right to left paper paths, thanks to a new mirror image version of the company’s award-winning Bourg Sheet Feeder (BSF) that features paper feeding out through its left side.

The new left-exit Bourg BSF offers the full feature set of the standard Bourg Sheet Feeder with its right paper exit, while retaining the ability to load incoming stacks of covers and content through the front of the machine. The new Bourg BSF will debut at Graph Expo 2014 in the HP booth #1913.

This latest addition to the versatile Bourg BSF platform can be connected to HP Indigo 7000 Series Digital Presses and other products with right-to-left paper paths, enabling dual mode production capability. This unique feature allows the finisher to operate both in-line and off-line while connected to the press, or as a near-line intelligent standalone finisher.

As a JDF-compliant device, the Bourg BSF finisher in an HP press environment receives setup and operational instructions via the HP Indigo Direct2Finish finishing automation solution, leading to faster turnarounds, labor savings and the elimination of errors and waste. The system can also be operated manually through the 12-inch color touch screen graphical user interface.

On the finishing side, the left-exit Bourg BSF is able to connect with the Bourg Bleed Crease Module (BCM-e) and Bourg Booklet Maker (BM-e), as well as with cutting, folding, stitching and coating finishers designed for right-to-left workflows made by Epic, Rollem and many other companies.

C.P. Bourg also is making the left-exit Bourg Sheet Feeder available in a new, super-efficient tandem sheet feeding configuration that the company is also introducing at Graph Expo 2014. An example of the new tandem BSF configuration -- which automatically switches between units to allow non-stop finishing of printed sheets from multiple presses in-line or off-line -- is on display at the C.P. Bourg booth # 3631.

Unique Dual-Mode Finishing Functionality

The Bourg BSF uniquely enables dual-mode finishing, which gives users of digital presses the ability to send jobs from off-line print streams to their dedicated in-line finishers. Until now, this capability was only available to users of equipment with left to right paper flows.

"The addition of a sheet feeder with a right-to-left paper path to our versatile BSF platform gives virtually any shop with a digital press access to C.P. Bourg’s unique dual-mode finishing functionality, regardless of their workflow direction or choice of finishing equipment," says James Tressler, Director of Marketing for C.P. Bourg Inc.

"With the Bourg Sheet Feeder -- or with two Bourg BSF feeders integrated in our new tandem BSF configuration -- providers with multiple print streams can maximize the utilization of their in-line finishing equipment by maintaining a steady flow of jobs from multiple sources. Alternatively, they can configure single or tandem Bourg BSFs with off-line finishers from C.P. Bourg or other manufacturers to automate many of their shop’s finishing processes," says Mr. Tressler.

In addition to enabling dual-mode finishing and integration with HP Indigo Direct2Finish automation functionality, the Bourg BSF maintains the integrity of collated sets through an innovative air-table design that allows its operator to load and easily center stacks of collated sets up to 19.7 inches (500 mm) high from stack carts common to HP Indigo, Kodak, Canon/Océ, Xerox and other manufacturer’s printers.

The Bourg BSF also feeds content and cover sheets up to 14.3 x 26 inches (364 x 660.4 mm) at rates up to 18,000 sheets/hour, combines optical mark recognition (OMR) and ultrasonic detection (DMC) technologies to detect doubled or missed sheets, and scans bar codes placed anywhere on the sheet to enable automated job tracking.

Debut at Graph Expo in HP Booth

The new left-exit Bourg BSF will debut at Graph Expo 2014 in the HP Indigo booth (#1913). There, C.P. Bourg, Inc. will demonstrate the dual-mode finishing functionality of a Bourg BSF connected to the new HP Indigo 7800 Digital Press operating in-line with a Bourg Bleed Crease Module and Bourg Booklet Maker ExPress(TM)

According to Frits Knepper, HP USA Solutions Manager for C.P. Bourg, Inc., the new addition to the Bourg BSF platform significantly expands the print finishing possibilities available to HP Indigo 7000 Series users.

"Automating the bindery operation is the next frontier in production efficiency. The combination of the new HP Indigo 7800 Digital Press, HP Indigo Direct2Finish and the C. P. Bourg Booklet Maker ExPress with the Bourg Sheet Feeder option delivers two new levels of increased efficiency," says Mr. Knepper. "First, booklets are produced in-line with automatic size adjustments on-the-fly. Second, in the off-line mode, booklets and precut sets of sheets are automatically stitched into sets while the HP Indigo digital press is printing a completely separate job. It’s the best of both worlds because you no longer have to choose between in-line and off-line configurations."

In the demonstration here at Graph Expo in the HP booth, a Bourg BSF is accepting print jobs for finishing alternately from the in-line HP Indigo 7800 Digital Press and from an off-line workflow, and sending them directly to the dedicated Bourg Bleed Crease Module and Booklet Maker ExPress.

The Bourg Booklet Maker ExPress, unveiled here at Print 13, is designed to work with HP Indigo 7000 Series Digital Presses. It shares the robust feature set of the Bourg Booklet Maker to achieve fast turnaround times and effortless, set-secure production "24/7" of booklets, flyers, calendars and other finished products using corner, side, head or saddle-stitches, at rates up to 5,000 sets per hour.
