CGATS Names Lawrence Warter as 2004 Rollie Award Recipient

Lawrence C. Warter, Director, New Business Development, with Enovation Graphic Systems, Inc., A Fujifilm Company, is the eleventh recipient of the Roland Zavada Standards Award, "The Rollie," presented by The Committee for Graphic Arts Technologies Standards (CGATS). The award will be presented on June 9 during the IPA Technical Conference in Chicago. The award recognizes an individual who has made significant and sustained contributions to the development of U.S. graphic arts standards through participation in the work of accredited standards committees. Warter has worked in sales, marketing, technical and research positions in the graphics arts field for more than 30 years, specializing in developing new markets and product applications based on projected market trends. During his employment with DuPont, he was involved with the market development for Brightlight films Cromalin. He also worked with Coulter Proofing before joining Fuji. Warter serves as Corporate Fuji's representative to all graphic arts standards efforts around the world. Through his involvement in standards-making activities, he has helped identify areas where standards are needed, promoted the development of standards, encouraged users to maintain an active role in writing standards, and coordinated efforts between various standards-making organizations. As a long-time member of the ANSI-accredited Committee for Graphic Arts Technologies Standards (CGATS), he is a past member of the CGATS Executive Committee and a voting member of several CGATS Subcommittees, including SC 3 (Metrology), SC 4 (Process Control), and SC 6 Task Force 1 (PDF/X). On the international level he serves on the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO’s Technical Committee 130 (Graphic Technology) as a U.S. Technical Expert to Working Groups 2 (Prepress Data Exchange), 3 (Process Control and Related Metrology), and 4 (Media and Materials). He also serves as the assistant convener to Working Group 3. As a member of the IPA Technical Committee and IPA Standards Committee, Larry has served as a liaison between IPA and standards-making organizations. He also represents the Research & Engineering Council of NAPL on CGATS committees. He represents Fuji and GATF on the International Color Consortium (ICC), and has served as chairman, founding member and member of the Rewrite Committee of the General Requirements for Applications in Commercial Offset Lithography (GRACoL) and a member of the review boards for Specifications for Newspaper Advertising Production (SNAP) and Specifications for Web Offset Publications (SWOP) as well as secretary to the board of SWOP. He has also worked with the CIP4 Cooperation for the Integration of Processes in Prepress, Press and Postpress. A graduate of Princeton with a degree in chemistry, Warter has also been active in industry organizations including NPES, Printing Industries of America, Graphic Arts Technical Foundation. National Association for Printing Leadership, Research and Engineering Council, IDEAlliance and Web Offset Association. He is a member of the advisory board at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and an author of frequent articles in industry publications. Through this experience, Warter fully met the Rollie Award criteria, which call for active participation on an accredited standards committee(s) for more than three years, promotion and support of standards development, leadership in the development of standards for the graphic arts and/or printing and publishing, or other significant technical and/or administrative support to an accredited standards committee.
