Doug Dugal Named Winner of 2014 Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award

ATLANTA, GA – Doug Dugal, co-founder and retired CEO of Integrated Paper Services, Appleton, Wisconsin, will be presented the 2014 TAPPI Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award. The award is the highest honor the association can bestow upon an individual for exemplary leadership that has significantly contributed to the advancement of the association. Dugal will receive the award at the 2014 PaperCon Conference Awards Dinner on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 in Nashville, TN, USA.

“Doug Dugal has served the association in a range of leadership roles during a long and very distinguished career in the pulp and paper industry, he has been a member of TAPPI since 1964. He always demonstrated the highest level of integrity and exemplary leadership and I am pleased to be able to honor his service to TAPPI with this prestigious award,” according to Larry N. Montague, president and CEO of TAPPI. “He’s a leader by example who inspires all of us with his hard work, integrity and dedication to service.”


H. S. (Doug) Dugal retired as co-founder and CEO of Integrated Paper Services (IPS) after a distinguished career spanning more than four decades. Before founding IPS he worked with James River Corporation and the Institute of Paper Chemistry, where he was a teacher and helped guide students doing postgraduate research. He headed the Department of Special Studies and the Ph.D. Thesis Committee. Prior to that he also worked in sugar, alcohol and rayon manufacturing plants. Dugal’s a well-known speaker and has published over 35 technical papers. He co-founded the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame where he continues to serve on the board and co-founded Indus of Fox Valley and served as its first Chairman of the Board.

During his career he’s earned several awards including being elected a TAPPI Fellow. He’s received the TAPPI Environmental Division Award, Roy F. Weston Prize and the Outstanding Local Section Member Award. In addition, Dugal is a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow and was awarded the Charles and Adele Heater Outstanding Community Leadership Award as well as the Shalimar Gold Medal at the IPPTA Conference.

In 1994 the award was established by a gift from Herman L. Joachim to TAPPI that was used to establish the Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award Fund. Since its inception the fund has provided a cash honorarium to each year’s honoree. Herman L. Joachim began working in the industry as a chemist for Bogalusa Paper Company and later managed several mills throughout the United States and later enjoyed a successful career as an engineering consultant. He has been a member of TAPPI for over 70 years.
