WASHINGTON - Public Printer Davita Vance-Cooks has named Andrew M. Sherman as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO).  In that capacity, Sherman will be responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and communication of the agency's strategic initiatives.  In carrying out these functions he will oversee GPO's Programs, Strategy, and Technology business unit as well as the agency's offices of Congressional Relations, Public Relations, and Employee Communications. This position reflects GPO's commitment to developing a focused approach to strategic planning, as recommended recently by the National Academy of Public Administration, as the agency continues its transformation from a print-centric to a content-centric enterprise.

"Whether working with Congress, Federal agencies, the media, GPO's employees, or our partners in the printing and information industries as well as the library and information user communities, Andy has a wealth of institutional knowledge and experience at GPO that cannot be over-valued," said Public Printer Davita Vance-Cooks. "He will be a great asset in the development, communication, and fulfillment of our strategic plans."

Sherman joined the GPO in 1980 and since 1985 has worked for the Office of the Public Printer, gaining extensive experience with the agency's budget, appropriations, legislation, strategic planning, and congressional and public affairs operations. Since 1997 he has been the agency's Director of Congressional Relations, serving as the key liaison to GPO's oversight and appropriations committees in the Senate and the House of Representatives.  For the past two years Sherman has been GPO's Chief Communications Officer, overseeing the agency's offices for congressional and public relations as well as employee communications.  He is a past recipient of the Public Printer's Meritorious and Distinguished Service awards. Sherman holds a B.A. and an M.A. in Government from The University of Virginia. Prior to joining the GPO he was a graduate teaching assistant in American history at Old Dominion University. As GPO's representative to the National Government Publishing Association, an organization of state and other printing and publishing organizations, he served as Eastern regional director, treasurer, and president.
