New York City - Nature Conservancy, the award-winning publication of the world-renowned environmental conservation group, was honored as a finalist at the Society of Publication Designers (SPD) Design Competition in the category of Best Tablet App (interactive single or series). Nature Conservancy Art Directors Christopher Johnson and Katie Lesser attended the 48th Annual SPD Gala recognizing the finalists at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on Friday night, May 10.

Each year, the SPD recognizes the best in editorial design from publications around the world. Nature Conservancy’s digital edition app for iPad—available for free on the App Store—was recognized for its stunning photography, dynamic content and in-depth look at the relationship between art and conservation efforts in the feature “Water Colors,” designed by Johnson and Lesser.

Other finalists in the category included Bon AppétitCondé Nast TravelerFast CompanyNational Geographic and O, The Oprah Magazine.

“It is an honor to be recognized among such notable finalists,” said Johnson. “The app is an integral piece of our content strategy, and its creative design allows us to bring photos and information to life, giving our readers a more immersive and powerful experience, and providing an opportunity to reach new audiences.”

Nature Conservancy transports the armchair traveler to lush rainforests, harsh deserts and the landscapes in between. The digital team, led by Senior Editor Jennifer Winger and Johnson, furthers this experience by incorporating features such as interactive maps and hiking guides, giving users more opportunities to experience the beautiful places The Nature Conservancy helps to protect.
