Chesapeake Continues to Make a Difference

Chesapeake, a leading supplier of consumer packaging, has once again committed to over 100 environment related projects in 2013. The company-wide ‘Chesapeake 100’ initiative aims to reduce the environmental impact of the group’s global operations whilst demonstrating its ongoing commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This year, the business has committed to in-excess of 130 environmental related improvement projects across its global operations. This means every Chesapeake site has committed to at least two targets ensuring they deliver measurable results. 

The ‘Chesapeake 100’ was launched in 2011 with ambitious first year targets. In 2012, 119 new challenging targets were set. Of these, 104 targets were achieved or exceeded, some being extended into 2013 and many continuing to deliver measureable results that will contribute to the process of sustainable improvement across the business for years to come. 

Phil Adams, CSR Director, said, “The Chesapeake 100 anchors our environmental strategy and provides a prominent point of focus for a wide range of site-specific initiatives. We’ve got plenty to do but we continue to make advances in conserving resources, lowering energy consumption, minimising waste and extending our social responsibility programmes.” 

In 2012, Chesapeake achieved some notable successes:

  • Energy savings of more than 1,000,000KWh realised across a number of sites
  • Further reductions in the use of film and associated chemicals
  • Chain of Custody certification programme extended to over 30 locations providing customers with the option of FSC® or PEFC™ fibre based products.
  • Sheet optimisation and lower process waste reduce waste by 600 tonnes
  • Improved waste segregation resulted in an extra 100 tonnes diverted from landfill

Phillip Adams, went on to say, “In 2013, we’d like to see a greater increase in social responsibility initiatives to further strengthen our links with local communities as well as consolidating our impressive health and safety protocols. The ownership of these projects remains at site level although the outcomes are being shared globally to ensure that best practices are adopted across the business. The projects demonstrate that, due to Chesapeake’s scale, making even the smallest changes can deliver impressive results.”
