Kinko's Variable-Cost Model Changes the Rules of Document Outsourcing

Press release from the issuing company

NEW YORK, March 9 -- On Demand 2004 -- Kinko's, an operating company of FedEx Corp., today announced its strategy for serving the on-demand document needs of large organizations during On Demand 2004 here in New York. Kinko's Commercial Solutions, an organization of specialists and custom offerings, recently launched a variable-cost model that is changing the rules of document outsourcing. According to industry analyst firm CAP Ventures, the U.S. document outsourcing market in 2003 was over $30 billion. Kinko's experience has shown that document outsourcing remains an untapped opportunity at a time when companies are seeking ways to cut costs, reduce waste and focus on their core business. Industry research shows that companies often spend up to 15 percent of revenue on printing, copying and storing documents. Yet unlike purchasing for many better known outsourced services -- such as payroll -- corporate print buying has historically been distributed among department budgets or locked up in rigid equipment contracts. In addition, this category has been dominated by equipment manufacturers offering fixed-plus-cost contracts that require users to meet monthly minimums. The groundbreaking new approach from Kinko's Commercial Solutions enables customers to evaluate their total print spend, turn fixed costs into variable costs, reclaim costly real estate and warehouse space, and consistently deliver high-quality results. "The customer response we are seeing demonstrates that businesses want customized document outsourcing solutions that are cost effective," said Gary Kusin, Kinko's president and chief executive officer. "Through Kinko's unique variable-cost model, corporate clients pay only for the documents they need. Kinko's Commercial Solutions reduces the fixed costs and hassle of managing on-site copy and print centers." Kinko's Commercial Solutions offers its flexible document outsourcing services to a range of larger organizations. In addition, the group has developed vertical market expertise in education, financial services, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and telecommunications. "Kinko's Commercial Solutions delivers on a clear need for organizations in many industries to better manage document costs," said John McDonald, senior vice president of sales for Kinko's. "Kinko's network of more than 1,200 digitally connected locations, dedicated commercial production facilities, 20,000 document professionals, and suite of services make changing the rules of document outsourcing possible."
