CU Boulder Installs Presstek 34DI

Press release from the issuing company

Press fully justified by transfer of 1,000+ print runs from digital toner device

Presstek, Inc., a leading supplier of digital offset printing solutions to the printing and communications industries, today announced that the University of Colorado at Boulder Imaging Services has installed a Presstek 34DI digital offset press. Founded in 1876, CU Boulder has more than 1,000 faculty members and serves about 30,000 students. Imaging Services has been the University's print shop since 1923 and is operated by nine full-time employees and six part-time students.

"As our volume of 4-color work continued to grow, especially in run lengths greater than 1,000," said Al Goranson, Manager of CU Imaging Services, "it became too expensive to address these needs with our existing HP Indigo digital press. We were able to justify the Presstek 34DI based solely on the volume transfer of longer run lengths from the Indigo. With the press in place, we also expect to be able to secure additional work from our campus customers."

"CU Boulder took advantage of our Certified Pre-Owned DI press program," said Joe Demharter, Presstek's Vice President of Sales & Marketing. "This allowed them to acquire a like-new press with a full warranty and Presstek Service Maintenance Agreement at a very competitive price. Imaging Services also found that another advantage of their DI press is its overall small environmental footprint."

Imaging Services, as a University Auxiliary organization, must compete for printing work with other resources. Goranson adds, "We have been doing about 15% to 20% of the University's printing. With the addition of the Presstek 34DI, we anticipate moving that to at least 30%. This will equate to an additional $500,000 in revenue for the department. Our customers are ecstatic about the quality the DI delivers and its small environmental footprint. These factors, along with our ability to deliver more cost-effective longer run printing, make it reasonable to assume we will be able to achieve that goal."

The Presstek 34DI is a highly automated 34cm portrait digital offset 4-color press. The 34DI features support for 300 lpi and FM screening, the ability to go from digital file to printed sheet in 10 minutes, and a small environmental footprint. The press prints up to 7,000 sheets per hour.
