Herald Sun Launches Hybrid iPad App, Created with WoodWing

Press release from the issuing company

The Herald Sun, Australia´s favorite daily newspaper – read by 1.3 million Victorians every weekday – has selected WoodWing´s multi-channel publishing system Enterprise and its Digital Publishing Tools to create its daily iPad editions.

With a combination of fixed categories and a scrollable, visual table of sections, the designers found an intuitive and reader-attractive way to present the very rich content. The three main sections – News, Sports and Confidential – are updated up to three times per day. The other sections – such as Cars Guide, HIT, Taste, Sunday, Body + Soul – are weeklies. This structure also enables the team to easily add specials as one-off releases. Each section can be downloaded separately so readers can quickly access the desired content.

The app also offers access to the e-paper replica of the Herald Sun print edition. The e-paper can be downloaded separately, enabling more traditional readers to start with the digital version and move to the enriched tablet edition at a later stage.

The app makes heavy use of the features of WoodWing´s Digital Publishing Tools, including hotspots, nested interactivity, scrollable areas, video and much more. The app provides sharing via social media and includes e-mail options so readers can get in touch with editors. In some articles, the author’s Twitter account is also included.

Dynamic Web Elements feed off real-time events such as the scoreboard in the Sports section. With new information pushed every three minutes, readers see the updates as games are being played. The Sudoku, crosswords and horoscopes are also inserted dynamically, freeing designers from repetitive tasks.

“This project greatly benefits from the workflow efficiency offered by WoodWing Enterprise and its content management application Content Station, and fully leverages the creative power of WoodWing´s Digital Publishing Tools,” said Andrew Lomas, Sales & Projects Director at Creative Folks, one of WoodWing´s Gold Authorized Solution Partners in Australia.

“We applaud both the teams at the Herald Sun and our partner Creative Folks for this exceptional app,” said Remco Koster, General Manager of WoodWing Asia Pacific. “It´s the perfect showcase of how our solutions help publishers to rethink the way they present their content in the digital publishing era.”
