Standard Register Celebrates 100 Years of Innovation

On Friday, May 11, 2012, Standard Register, a leader in the management and execution of mission-critical communications, will mark the 100th anniversary of its founding. The company will be celebrating this milestone with employee activities in its hometown of Dayton, Ohio, and at its facilities throughout the U.S. and in northern Mexico, as well as in a closing bell ringing ceremony at the New York Stock Exchangeon Friday, May 11. The company has also developed a commemorative logo that will be used throughout its centennial year.

Throughout its first 100 years, Standard Register has provided innovative solutions for business communications needs. The company’s history is the history of technology applied to improving communications. Its current strategy of advancing its customers’ reputations could have applied throughout its history as it helped customers publish and manage important communications.

Standard Register’s founders introduced a simple improvement to the autographic register that allowed documents to feed more effectively through the equipment. This first innovation revolutionized business transactions and became the “standard” for the industry. The company has thrived by providing numerous other innovations, and has had more than 890 patents issued. Among the company’s notable accomplishments are:

  • 1920s – Became “The Standard” appliance for business data collection and distribution
  • 1940s – Production of wooden registers to conserve metal for the war effort during World War II
  • 1940s – Introduced paperwork simplification processes to businesses
  • 1950s – Introduced the automatic linefeeder to provide continual form alignment on office equipment
  • 1960s – Developed the THERMOBOND® Mailing System, which produced self-seal, one-step mailers
  • 1960s – Introduced the Source Record Punch that recorded information in human-readable and machine-readable language for early computers
  • 1970s – Expanded systems offering bar coding technology and applications
  • 1980s – Opened its first Print-on-Demand center
  • 1980s – Became a leader in document security and business forms
  • 1990s – Introduced Positive Patient Identification System™ using bar code technology
  • 1990s – Added variable digital color technology that allows personalization of Print-on-Demand documents
  • 2000s – Developed SMARTworks® - a one-stop, cost-effective portal for print procurement and document management
  • 2000s – Acquired in-mold labeling technology for permanent, durable and flexible labeling
  • 2010s – Introduced tablet and mobile device applications that facilitate customer communications, order tracking and inventory management
