Heidelberg Unveils Energy-saving UV Dryer Specifically for Commercial Printers

At drupa 2012, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be unveiling a very special UV dryer that minimizes energy costs. The DryStar LE (Low Energy) UV impresses with its improved price-performance ratio and makes it easier for commercial printers to enter the UV market. This energy-saving dryer is suitable for four- or five-color commercial products, with or without a coating, produced on the Speedmaster XL 105 or Speedmaster XL 75. It is based on the proven technology of the DryStar UV, which has been adapted to the specific requirements of commercial printing. The DryStar LE UV consumes less electrical energy than the original version - an important step on the way to sustainable print media production. It will be on show at drupa on a Speedmaster XL 75 at the stand of Heidelberg partner IST Metz in Hall 2 as a response to the HEI Eco market trend.
UV applications are enjoying continuous growth in both high-quality packaging printing and high-end commercial printing. In the production of high-gloss brochures, for example, UV printing opens up totally new possibilities in terms of gloss, feel, protection, and rub resistance. By offering such solutions, print shops can stand out from the competition in the fiercely competitive commercial printing market and win over new customer segments. Three factors are key for the economic success of UV printing - machine capacity utilization, purchase price, and operating costs.
High flexibility and innovative technology
The DryStar LE UV is suitable for presses employing both UV-only and hybrid operation. This flexibility makes it a particularly attractive option for commercial print shops that are looking to enjoy the advantages of UV printing, benefit from an excellent price-performance ratio, and stand out on the market. Like all dryers in the DryStar UV series from Heidelberg, this new energy-saving version is perfectly integrated into the press. The special URS (UV Reflection System) reflectors filter out thermal radiation very efficiently and are effective in reducing the transfer of heat to substrates. This optimum heat management protects temperature-sensitive materials and ensures an ideal register. The compact supply cabinet of the DryStar LE UV is just 2.20 meters (86.61 inches) long, which makes it ideal for print shops where space is at a premium.
The DryStar LE UV is available with one, two, or a maximum of three lamps for each machine configuration. One lamp can dry up to four UV inks, whereas at least two lamps per machine configuration are needed to cure UV coatings. The DryStar LE UV is equipped with an activated carbon filter and does not need any additional exhaust air connection.
The output of each lamp is freely selectable between 80 and 200 watts per centimeter, depending on the requirements of the print job. This wide range of settings makes it possible to cure both conventional and highly reactive UV inks and coatings. Although highly reactive inks require less drying energy, the savings in terms of energy costs are nowhere near enough to compensate the higher ink costs. The DryStar LE UV has sufficient capacity in reserve not to be restricted to a single ink series.
