C.P. Bourg At Graphics Canada

Press release from the issuing company

Leading technology developer and supplier of in-line and near-line document feeding, binding and finishing equipment C.P. Bourg announced today that it achieved milestones at Graphics Canada in Toronto earlier this month with the launch to the Canadian market of its new BSFx dual-mode sheet feeder and JDF-enabled BDFEx document finisher, a collaborative demonstration of soft and hard-cover bookbinding, and the signing of orders for three perfect binders.

Dual-Mode Finishing in Canadian Debut

"Without a doubt, the Canadian launch of the Bourg BSFx and BDFEx in the Xerox Canada booth was a showstopper," exclaimed C.P. Bourg Vice President of Sales Donald J. Schroeder. "The Bourg BSFx is a versatile, high-speed sheet feeder -- and the print industry's first dual-mode device designed for on-line digital print workflows."

Certified by Xerox to run with Xerox Nuvera(R) Production Systems, the BSFx transforms a finishing line that's dedicated to a single digital print engine into a super-efficient off-line production system that can handle the output from any number of different presses in order to maximize productivity and equipment ROI.

The BSFx is equipped with two feeding compartments that can accept pile heights of 20 inches for primary content and up to 6.3 inches for covers or other content. Able to feed up to 15,000 sheets per hour to various C.P. Bourg and other manufacturers' finishing modules, the BSFx can be loaded "virtually hands free" utilizing an innovative air-table design that allows its operator to load and easily center stacks of collated print output from stack carts common to Xerox and other manufacturer's printers.

JDF-Enabled Document Finishing

That BSFx teamed with the Xerox Nuvera in the Xerox Canada booth was used to feed digitally-printed off-line output to Bourg's new BDFEx Document Finisher, also in its Canadian launch. The BDFEx is a JDF-enabled version of C.P. Bourg's proven BDF-series document finisher that combines all three finishing functions -- stitch, fold and trim -- in a single compact and self-contained unit able to produce booklets of up to 88 pages at rates up to 4,200 sets/hour.

The JDF-enabled Bourg BDFEx Document Finisher delivers on the promise of touchless print finishing by operating seamlessly in-line with a digital press as a tightly integrated unit, synchronizing production instructions, preventing production of "impossible jobs" and enabling automatic document size changeovers to accommodate with peak efficiency any type of job the production system is capable of handling.

Bookbinding Made Simple

C.P. Bourg also collaborated with three suppliers to demonstrate a complete bookbinding operation for producing hard-cover volumes from perfect bound book blocks. "Attendees watched the process and left our booth with a fully-finished, hard-cover case-bound copy of 'Bookbinding Made Simple'," said Mr. Schroeder.

The production line started with book blocks produced by a Bourg BB Adventure PUR Binder and a Bourg BB3002 EVA Perfect Binder. Each of the perfect-bound book blocks was covered with endsheets supplied by Library Binding Supplies (LBS), glued and pressed using On-Demand Machinery (ODM) equipment, and finished on a Challenge Manufacturing CMT130 trimmer.

"Our production line was a great demonstration of the perfect business concept for shops of all types looking for a new, low-cost or high-profit revenue stream," Mr. Schroeder explained.

C.P. Bourg was rewarded with orders during the show for three Bourg perfect binders plus peripheral equipment. Toronto-area binder Marwood Bookworks signed with C.P. Bourg dealer Robert E. Thistle for a Bourg BB Adventure PUR Binder. A second Bourg BB Adventure was purchased by Fresh Color Press of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, while Ken Cook Company in Milwaukee ordered a Bourg BB3002 Perfect Binder.
