C.P. Bourg Unveils JDF-Enabled BDFEx Document Finisher

Press release from the issuing company

  • "Bourg Box"-equipped BDFEx communicates directly with a digital printer to set up automatically for the next job through JDF commands.
  • The new document finisher has been certified by Xerox for use with all Xerox Nuvera Production Systems.
  • A Web-to-Finish solution featuring the new BDFEx will be demonstrated in Chicago at Graph Expo 2011 in Xerox booth #400.

McCormick Place, Chicago;  – C.P. Bourg, the world's leading technology developer and supplier of in-line and near-line document feeding, binding and finishing equipment, is unveiling at Graph Expo 2011 an enhanced version of its proven Bourg BDF Document Finisher capable of fully automated operation as part of a highly productive "Web-to-finish" printing solution.

The new Bourg BDFEx Document Finisher delivers on the promise of touchless print finishing for medium-format printing environments through the addition of a "Bourg Box" communications module that gives C.P. Bourg finishing devices an integral role in the manufacturing process.

In operation, the Bourg solution "reads" a digital job ticket generated automatically by a customer's electronic order for print services, enabling the Bourg BDFEx to set up for the next job under program control. Job tickets can be written in Job Definition Format (JDF), the XML-based file format standard for information exchange in the graphic arts. The Bourg Box is also designed to communicate with proprietary operating systems used by digital presses and finishers, such as Xerox Document Finishing Architecture (DFA).

In this way, the Bourg Box allows the Bourg BDFEx to operate seamlessly in-line with a digital press as a tightly integrated unit, synchronizing production instructions, preventing production of "impossible jobs" and enabling automatic document size changeovers to accommodate with peak efficiency any type of job the production system is capable of handling.

Latest in a Long Line of Proven Finishers

The Bourg BDFEx is the latest in C.P. Bourg's proven line of fully automated BDF-series document finishers that combine all three finishing functions stitch, fold and trim in a single compact and self-contained unit able to produce booklets of up to 88 pages at rates up to 4,200 sets/hour.

BDF series Document Finishers feature many Bourg-developed innovations, including a paper transport with a unique lugged belt that gently pushes each set to the finishing functions without scuffing or marking; fully automatic document size changeovers to accommodate sheet sizes from 5 x 8-inches up to14 x 20.5-inches; top or corner stitching from 2 sheets to 55 sheets of 80 gsm; sharp, square folds with perfect centering and registration; and precision face trims to within 1/250th of an inch.

To these and many other features, the BDFEx Document Finisher adds the Bourg Box communications module with its associated software and electronics, and a graphical user interface with touchscreen functionality.

Due to their fully integrated and proven automated paper handling, stitching and trimming features, Bourg BDF finishers are widely regarded among the most efficient and reliable document finishers ever built. They are also one of the most successful, with thousands of the compact stitch-fold-trim units installed at user locations around the world.

"The ability of the BDFEx to operate seamlessly and produce the highest quality print finishing is testimony to overall BDF product design and to C.P. Bourg dedication to quality, innovation and efficiency. These traits have made Bourg BDF Document Finishers popular products with print finishing professionals around the world for a broad range of applications in diverse markets," said Richard Trapilo, Executive Vice President and General Manager, C.P. Bourg, Inc.

Designed for Xerox Nuvera

The new Bourg Box-equipped BDFEx is designed for use with Xerox top-of-the-line production systems, and has been certified by Xerox for use with Xerox Nuvera 100, 122 and 144 EA Production Systems, and Xerox Nuvera 200 and 288 EA Perfecting Production Systems.

"As the latest C.P. Bourg finishing product to be certified by Xerox Corporation, the Bourg BDFEx Document Finisher highlights our 22-year relationship with Xerox as a premier business partner, adding to our history of developing document feeding and finishing solutions that have met Xerox's high standards for quality and productivity and that have contributed significantly to the business success of Xerox and its customers," he explained.

The BDFEx joins C.P. Bourg's growing stable of JDF-enabled finishing devices including the large-format Bourg BMEx Booklet Maker for the innovative Xerox iGen4 EXP Web-to-Finish solution.
"The new Bourg Box can enhance finishing productivity and efficiency both on-line and off-line in digital printing environments to deliver on the promise of totally automated touchless workflows," said Mr. Trapilo.

"In a digital printing environment, there's no room or time for manual setups of machine changeovers. To achieve peak efficiency, the finishing process must operate automatically under process control. This is exactly what the Bourg Box enables. It's also what makes the Bourg BDFEx Document Finisher the perfect complement to the Xerox Nuvera and iGen series for shops that need the reliability and efficiency of a proven medium-format finishing workhorse, especially where manufacturing floor space is at a premium," he explained.

The new BDFEx Document Finisher will be available in Q4 2011, with shipments slated to begin in November.
