HELIOS WebShare adds remote Internet file sharing to file servers

Press release from the issuing company

LEIPZIG, Germany--- October 14, 2003-- IFRA Expo 2003--- Hall 2; booth #A501; HELIOS Software GmbH, a leading provider of file, print and prepress server solutions, introduced its new HELIOS WebShare, an extremely fast and secure, remote Internet file server. Available now as a standalone product for a wide variety of Unix-based platforms, including Mac OS X and Linux, HELIOS WebShare represents the first server software from HELIOS to support the Microsoft Windows 2000/2003 Server platform. Known worldwide for its leading network file servers for Macintosh (EtherShare) and PCs (PCShare), HELIOS WebShare adds fast and secure remote Internet file sharing as a critical 3rd dimension to the company¹s (http://www.helios.de) suite of leading file servers. HELIOS WebShare makes remote use of file servers via the Internet as easy to use as if working on a local workstation. Files can be accessed and swapped directly and speedily via a Web browser, so that there is no need for any additional WebDAV, FTP, AFP or SMB/CIFS connections that typically slow down file transfers or make the process more difficult. And, collaboration becomes easier as each user has the same view of the data set and can also work directly on any document. HELIOS WebShare is a two-tier server application, with the WebShare WebObjects server generating dynamic HTML pages of the content that is provided by the WebShare File Server. When a user wants to work in directories of the internal File Server, the WebShare WebObjects Server first verifies the authorization for the request, and then forwards it, together with the access rights of the logged-in user, to the WebShare File Server. The File Server then starts an autonomous process with these user access rights so the remote user can only see their files and directories, or those released to groups that the user is a member of. This system ensures that the company file server is not published on the Internet. HELIOS WebShare enables any remote staff member or authorized customer with a Web browser to upload files to the File Server, or download files from the File Server to the local desktop via the Internet. And because the data transfer to and from the central server is as easy as local copying, users can move, rename or delete files and folders in the file system. All tasks are executed directly on the File Server so that there is no longer a difference between local and remote users. In addition to general remote file transfer duties, HELIOS WebShare is ideal for Data Access Management (DAM) and prepress applications. When used in combination with HELIOS ImageServer and HELIOS PDF HandShake, WebShare can also provide remote access to previews of QuarkXPress and InDesign documents, of images in a variety formats including PDF documents, via a Web browser. In doing so, HELIOS WebShare excels in a high level of security and fast file transfer while remaining easy to use.
