Tom McMillan Award for Editorial Excellence awarded to Keith Hevenor

Press release from the issuing company

CHICAGO -- At Graph Expo 2003, the Tom McMillan Foundation presents its 5th Annual Tom McMillan Award for Editorial Excellence to Keith Hevenor, Editor in Chief of Electronic Publishing. The award is presented annually to the editor or writer who exhibits the highest standards of journalistic integrity and professionalism; understanding of the industry, including its technologies and applications; and performs their duties in such a way as to act as a role model for other journalists. Dozens of industry communications professionals vote to select each year’s winner. The McMillan Award selection in this, its 5th year, is especially poignant given that Tom and Keith were close colleagues at Electronic Publishing. About Keith Hevenor Hevenor’s 15+ years of publishing industry involvement began with his tenure as a production coordinator for the Christian Science Monitor in Boston. He there developed expertise in the nuances of phototypesetting, paste-up, and camera work; while also learning to work within the demands of a tight, daily production schedule.  He joined PennWell Publishing as a magazine production manager in 1989, and was actively involved in the publishing house’s transition to desktop publishing and electronic prepress.  In 1991, Hevenor began his ascendancy to top editorial positions at two flagship Advanced Technology Division titles, Computer Graphics World and Electronic Publishing.   Keith’s Unique Contribution Keith’s wide-ranging, practical experience in both traditional and electronic prepress operations allows him to bring keen insight and analytical commentary as the industry evolves. As an editor he is well respected for his holistic approach, thorough attention to detail, fairness, and ability to get at the heart of any story and present it in the most intriguing and informative manner. What the McMillan Award Founders Say About Keith Hevenor “Keith’s integrity, keen understanding of the industry, humor and sharp intellect distinguish him among his peers,” says Judy Sweeney of Helene Smith Public Relations. “Keith balances business excellence with an intuitive sense of what makes a good story and why it is relevant to the readers he serves.  Keith has the ability to relate openly and genuinely with everyone, from CEO and on.   “These traits truly honor the soul and spirit of Tom McMillan and the McMillan Award. It’s an honor to honor Keith.” About the Award… The Tom McMillan Foundation was formed in 1999 to support the former Editor in Chief of Electronic Publishing magazine in his fight against ALS.  For more than 15 years McMillan served the graphic arts industry as a writer and magazine editor specializing in electronic publishing and computer graphics technology.  McMillan was diagnosed early in 1998 with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, which he fought until his death the following year at age 47. Ongoing support for the Foundation comes from founding members who continue to raise awareness for this debilitating and incurable disease, in addition to presenting an annual editorial excellence award in McMillan’s name to a well-deserving industry journalist.   Past Winners... Tom McMillan received the first Award for Editorial Excellence at an emotional ceremony conducted in conjunction with Seybold Boston in February of 1999. Tom succumbed to his illness just 5 months later, in July. In 2000, Stephen Edwards of Seybold Publications was voted overwhelmingly as the second recipient of the McMillan Award. In 2001, recipient Earl Wilken, a long-time industry veteran, was met with great support and enthusiasm. Last year’s winner Jill Roth, Director of Brand Development/Special Projects Editor at American Printer, also received such resounding support. McMillan Industry Scholarship... In addition to the awards ceremony, the Foundation funds an industry scholarship, established with the help of the National Scholarship Trust Fund of the Graphic Arts (a division of GATF), to aid students pursuing a career in the graphic arts.
