KBR Graphics Canada, a major supplier of printing equipment throughout Ontario and Quebec, has installed a new MGI Meteor DP60 PRO digital press at Imprimerie Contact, an award-winning Montreal full-service print shop. The new press, which was installed in April 2011, is the first of its kind on the island of Montreal.
 
"The Meteor DP60 PRO digital press is the perfect complement to our company," says André Goyette, president of Imprimerie Contact. "Our customers and the market demanded it. The new digital press gives us high quality and greater flexibility along with our offset presses to satisfy their needs."
 
The Meteor DP60 PRO, the most versatile digital press in the global graphics market, allows users to produce CMYK jobs at 2,400 dpi on the widest range of substrates from paper to plastics to envelopes from 20# to 16pt on the largest sheet size from 4 x 6 inches up to 13 x 40 inches. It produces offset-comparable output quality prints at 3,900 color pages per hour with no click charges and an economical total cost of operation. The DP60 has integrated color management tools, such as an densitometer and standard i1 spectrophotometer and can work in a variety of profiles, including Fogra (ISO 12647-7), ICC, SWOP and others.
 
Mr. Goyette explains the many benefits that his company is receiving from the new Meteor digital press. "This revolutionary digital color press allows us to print on the widest range of substrates-up to 16 pt, paper applications including offset, matte, coated, textured, Chromolux, self-adhesive, transparent, and Bristol and even plastic applications, such as standard PVC, polycarbonate, polyester, Teslin, or magnetic," says André Goyette. "It has a large print format of up to 13 x 40 inches. It provides an offset-comparable output quality of 2,400 dpi/200 lpi due to its oil-free toner and features PANTONE certified "Spot On" calibration. The Meteor offers a laser-safe guarantee in which any letterhead printed on will not smudge or ghost when run through the customer's laser printer. Internally, it features an integrated automatic calibration during printing to ensure consistent outstanding quality as well as the ability to integrate variable datas into the print run for bar codes, ID photos, numbering, etc."
 
While Imprimerie Contact's offset presses--a five-color and two-color sheetfed-are used for longer run jobs, the new Meteor is producing short-run work from 10 to 2,000 sheets. This work encompasses stationery, envelopes, invitations, folders, covers, brochures, and customized mailings. A small folding, scoring machine and manual UV coater were also purchased along with the Meteor to help post-press. The Meteor ensures that the customer's job is quickly and efficiently produced with the fastest turnaround.
 
The Meteor's efficiency also helps Imprimerie Contact with its own environmental commitment and internal costs. "We've found that the Meteor is up to full-color production in only two to three sheets," says André Goyette. "That helps to condense our turnaround time, decreases our waste, protects the environment, and saves on paper costs, especially on the more costly types of substrates."
 
Future endeavors: plastic and variable data printing
 
Since April, Imprimerie Contact has been producing jobs on all types of paper substrates on the new Meteor. Plans to begin printing work on plastic and other unique substrates are beginning to take shape. Imprimerie Contact printed a colorful 32 inch folder from the Meteor to show prospective customers what can be easily accomplished.
 
Another interesting market is variable data printing. André Goyette believes that the Meteor would be a linchpin in this area, in which personal names, addresses, specific marketing messages, images, and bar codes are printed on direct mail and advertising material, and could fuel growth in the future for Imprimerie Contact as well as its customers. Variable data capabilities, he says, will provide his clients' needs for integrated marketing solutions.
 
"For the last three years we have been researching and studying different digital presses," explains André Goyette. "This is our first digital press so we wanted to ensure that we made the best decision. All of the other digital press models were limited to a smaller sheet size but the Meteor is so much larger. Plus quality is very important to our customers and after testing the Meteor we found that it had the highest quality above any of its competitors. In purchasing the Meteor we have both high quality and a larger sheet size."
 
As for the future, Mr. Goyette predicts that he'll be adding more hours of production on the Meteor digital press as well as new employees.
 
Imprimerie Contact purchased its MGI Meteor DP60 PRO press from KBR Graphics. "A few years ago, we purchased a small offset press from KBR," recalls Goyette. They take a pro-active approach with their customers, which we appreciate, and we're very satisfied with our installation, training, and service. Our training for the new Meteor press went very well and was easy."
