More than 1400 titles are now included in the portfolio of Stroma, which has been at the forefront of digital printing since its launch more than a decade ago. The specialist has taken an Océ JetStream 1000 superfast inkjet production press as part of a £1.3 million investment at its west London headquarters, and is providing a quality level comparable to traditional printing. The introduction of the Océ JetStream 1000 – printing in excess of 1,000 36-page tabloids per hour – enables longer runs of digitally produced newspapers and further expansion into book publications for Stroma.

Stroma pioneers digital newspaper production for readers in London
Supplying digital printing services across London and the surrounding area, Stroma is one of five Océ Digital Newspaper Network sites in the world. The others are in Singapore, New York, Los Angeles and Sydney. Around 30 million newspaper copies have been produced globally through this network since 2001, of which a quarter at Stroma. In the newspaper industry, the company is recognized across the globe as a pioneer and market leader in digital production. It prints and distributes international newspaper titles from across the globe to readers in London. These titles include the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Moscow Times, The Australian and the Sydney Morning Herald.

Digital color making a huge difference for publishers and advertisers
Steve Brown, Managing Director of Stroma and a key speaker today at a Digital Newspaper Forum at the Océ Production Printing Summit in Poing, Germany, said: "Now we're in color we've expanded our titles from eight black and white and now we have a choice of about 1400 different titles. Currently we run anything between 50 and 60 titles a day. This is something the publishers have been wanting for a long time, and will now be realized. Color has made a huge difference from an advertising and publishing perspective. In addition, the technology lends itself to adding value to companies like Qantas Airlines for example. We print a couple of Australian titles for them and they go on to the seats of business and first class. And in effect the passengers are reading tomorrow's news today!:"
Delivering titles in 20 minutes for royal wedding guests jetting home

"A good example of the immediacy of this technology was when we had a call from an agent saying that one of the Arab royal families was leaving London on their private jet after the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton and they asked us for one or two titles. We printed them and they were on that plane within 20 minutes."

A new era in digital newspaper production
Sebastian Landesberger, Executive Vice President, Océ Production Printing, said: "Newspapers printed digitally in color provide a steady revenue stream and potential growth opportunity for newspaper publishers. The Océ JetStream inkjet technology is complementary to offset and opens up so many new doors for targeted, niche, personalised products, which is what the newspaper industry has been waiting for. Nowadays newspapers published pretty well anywhere in the world can be read on any continent at virtually the touch of a digital button."
