Quark and The Perseus Books Group Partner for Digital Publishing

Press release from the issuing company

NEW YORK, NY – Quark and The Perseus Books Group announced today that they have entered into an agreement to implement Quark's dynamic publishing software for book production, with a target launch of early fall.

Through its Constellation service, Perseus will use Quark's dynamic publishing solution to simplify and automate the process of publishing books across formats. A core feature of the Quark solution is the ability to create a single-source document that can be delivered across multiple types of media. The original book file is created in an e-book compatible format that is ready for export to the Web, social media, and mobile devices without further conversion.

"This is something we have been working toward for some time now," said David Steinberger, CEO and President of The Perseus Books Group. "We are thrilled to be working with Quark to offer our independent publishers the ability to create structured content at the start of a book's life that can be delivered across media platforms."

"We've evaluated various potential partners and found that this new software from Quark offers the best solution for creating, managing, and publishing content from independent publishers," said Melissa Serdinsky, Vice President of Digital Operations for The Perseus Books Group. "Working with Quark and their innovative software will enable the authors and publishers we represent to streamline their publishing workflow."

"The Perseus Books Group is a visionary publisher that provides, through its Constellation program, a valuable digital service," said PG Bartlett, Senior Vice President of Product Management for Quark. "The publishing solution from Quark brings all of the pieces of dynamic publishing together, starting with structured content through to automated publishing across print, Web, and digital media. This is the most intelligent, cost-efficient, and future-proof approach to publish to print and the rapidly growing array of digital devices."

Once implemented, all publishers using Constellation will be able to allow their creators to author structured content easily in a Microsoft Word user interface that does not require knowledge of XML. It also minimizes training and increases productivity by leveraging familiar tools.

The Perseus Books Group is implementing a dynamic publishing solution based on the following Quark software:

  • QuarkXPress: QuarkXPress 9, the latest version of Quark's award winning software for print and digital design and publishing, adds features specifically for the creation of e-books in the Blio eReader and ePUB formats.
  • Quark XML Author for Microsoft Word: This next generation of XML authoring tools is an add-in to Microsoft Word that allows anyone using Microsoft Word to easily create structured XML content without knowledge of XML and little or no training. The familiar, simple, and full-featured user interface makes it possible for anyone – not just technical experts – to use Microsoft Word to create valid XML-based content components that can be managed by Quark Publishing System and published to a variety of print and digital media.
  • Quark Publishing System: Quark Publishing System is a dynamic publishing platform that provides a broad range of functionality to streamline and automate the publishing process. It enables editorial workflow and collaboration among content creators – including those working remotely; manages both structured and unstructured content; and publishes content across print, Web, and digital media.
  • App Studio for Quark Publishing System: App Studio for Quark Publishing System is a module that reduces the creative and technical barriers associated with publishing to the iPad. It allows publishers who use Quark Publishing System to create and publish custom iPad apps. Advanced automation within Quark Publishing System automatically assembles and publishes each digital issue to eliminate the need for complex development, time-consuming manual processes, disconnected workflows, and additional infrastructure to publish to the iPad.
