WoodWing enhances support for multiple tablet platforms

Press release from the issuing company

Zaandam, The Netherlands – WoodWing Software, a leading supplier of cost-effective cross-media publishing solutions and an innovation leader in multi-platform tablet publishing, today announced a number of major new features for its Reader apps for iOS and Android, as well as for its Content Delivery Service. With this upgrade of its Tablet Publishing Solution, WoodWing helps newspaper, magazine and corporate publishers worldwide to further enhance their tablet publishing business models, offering readers an even more exciting and comfortable reading experience.

iPad Reader App 1.8: Customizable HTML store, mixed subscriptions and extra download convenience
With its new HTML5-based store, WoodWing´s new iPad Reader App 1.8 enables publishers to fully customize the storefront of the kiosk in the app, allowing for a branded shopping experience – one that is, above all, entirely unique. In addition, publishers can now offer subscriptions via iTunes and a separate subscription server in the very same app, so that readers can choose the service of their preference.

WoodWing´s new iPad Reader App also optimizes the reader’s comfort by eliminating the need to wait until the download of their desired issue is completed. The download continues in the background even when they close the Reader app, allowing them to perform other tasks in the meantime. “Add this to the existing progressive downloads – allowing the reader to start reading while the download is still in progress – and downloading issues has really become convenient,” said Erik Schut, President of WoodWing Software. WoodWing´s new Reader app also offers a variety of user-interface and usability improvements.

“In 2011, Apple´s iPad will remain the tablet platform with the highest market relevance,” Schut said. “By utilizing the new capabilities of WoodWing´s iPad Reader app, publishers can further optimize the sales and distribution of their iPad editions.”

Android Reader App 1.1: Native Apps for Android 2.2 and Android 3.0
WoodWing´s new Android Reader App 1.1 is available in two flavors, supporting Android 2.2 (Froyo) and 3.0 (Honeycomb). WoodWing's multi-screen functionality enables publishers to create content for devices with multiple resolutions and aspect ratios. With numerous other Android devices on the way, though, there may be variations of resolutions and aspect ratios for which publishers don't want to optimize their content. To assist publishers in those cases, WoodWing introduces the new “Fit page to screen” feature, allowing them to define how the content should be mapped on the target display when the publication is read on a device for which it has not specifically been designed. Publishers have a choice of three intelligent mapping options.

In addition, the new version of WoodWing´s Android Reader app provides a range of interface and usability enhancements. WoodWing´s native Reader apps take full advantage of the underlying platform – the Honeycomb app, for example, fully supports the concepts of the graphical user interface of Honeycomb, such as the action bar.

WoodWing´s HTML5 Web App reaches out to Millions of Web users
WoodWing has also announced the availability of its HTML5 Reader app, allowing publishers to extend their reach to users of the Safari and Chrome Web browsers; Chrome alone has already attracted 120 million users. Using WoodWing´s Tablet Publishing Solution, the creation of the HTML5 digital publications is effortless, as they can be exported as a copy of the editions for the iPad, Android, BlackBerry PlayBook or webOS tablet devices.

WoodWing´s Content Delivery Platform ready for multi-platform tablet publishing
WoodWing offers a hosted Content Delivery Service (CDS), which uses 65,000 servers around the globe to quickly deliver the daily, weekly or monthly issues to the Reader apps of the numerous tablet publications created with WoodWing´s Tablet Publishing Solution. The service is now totally ready for the upswing of multi-platform tablet publishing. Functionality has been added to easily manage publication issues for different devices and resolutions. In addition, the user-interface has been completely redesigned for improved usability, and publishers can administer multiple apps more easily.

“With the many interactive features our solution currently offers, our Tablet Publishing Solution provides designers infinite creative freedom to create stunning tablet publications,” said Erik Schut. “We have also started development of an industry standard for multi-platform tablet publishing, such as with our recent ofip initiative (www.ofip.info). We are also busy developing extra functionality that enables publishers to further optimize their tablet publishing business models, so they can tap the revenue opportunities this new channel provides.”

With around 250 WoodWing tablet apps on the market, publishers worldwide have produced more than 3,000 daily, weekly or monthly tablet issues. WoodWing´s Content Delivery Service delivers more than a million downloads per month, making WoodWing the most popular tablet publishing solution on the market today.
