Central Piedmont Community College recognized in Twin Oaks Student Achievement Awards

CHARLOTTE, NC (February 2, 2004) -- Central Piedmont Community College received recognition in the annual PICA Awards, The Printing Industry of the Carolinas, Inc. has announced.   The Charlotte, NC-based graphic arts program received 19 awards in the Twin Oaks Student Achievement Awards, the student division of the industry PICA Awards, the most prestigious symbol of printing excellence in the Carolinas. They received awards for flexographic, offset and screen printing entries.   Students in the Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology program who received awards are: Aaron Crich, Donnell Dixon, Julie Fullen, Stephen Gerhardt, Lori Johnson, William Lighthall, Diana McGuire, Crystal Ritter, Rex Roll and Jennifer Weidlich. Instructors are Gareth Burns and Zachery Blackburn.   The Twin Oaks Student Achievement Awards are sponsored by The Twin Oaks Team, Inc., a recruiting firm based in Raleigh, NC. Participation in the 2003 student awards increased 100% over 2002, with 11 high schools entering 70 entries and 9 colleges entering 288 pieces. Only 9 high schools entered 37 pieces and six colleges entered 141 pieces in the 2002 competition.   Only high school and colleges with graphic arts, printing, or graphic arts and imaging technology programs in North and South Carolina are eligible to enter the competition. Processes represented in the competition are flexographic, offset and screen printing. The winners were announced on January 31st at the annual PICA Awards banquet, held at the Renaissance Hotel in Charlotte.   The Printing Industry of the Carolinas, Inc. (PICA) is a trade association representing the graphic communications industry in North and South Carolina. North Carolina ranks as the 13th largest state print market in the United States with 1,122 total printing establishments and 30,040 employees. South Carolina ranks 31st in the nation with 415 establishments and 9,461 employees. PICA is headquartered in Charlotte, NC.
