Dunn and Co. expands offerings with Xeikon technology

Press release from the issuing company

Itasca, IL - Xeikon, an innovator in digital color printing technology, today announced that Dunn and Co., a Massachusetts-based company specializing in book printing, binding, folding, laminating, conversions, and repairs, is utilizing the unique capabilities of the Xeikon 8000 digital color press to differentiate itself from the competition.

Dunn and Co. integrated the Xeikon 8000 digital color press into its existing in-house operations, which consist of both digital and offset equipment. The company uses its Xeikon 8000 to print short-run, on demand books.

Brian Newton, vice president of operations for Dunn & Co., said the Xeikon 8000 was ideal for printing extremely lightweight book stocks for the education publishing field. "In addition to its substrate handing capabilities, the speed and productivity of the Xeikon 8000 were major considerations for us. The press was head and shoulders above other digital printing options for our specific needs in short run books and custom publishing," Newton said. "We're excited about the potential for the Xeikon 8000 to help grow other pieces of our business."

Founded in 1976, Dunn & Co. occupies a 300,000-square-foot manufacturing space with 150 full-time employees in Clinton, MA. The company has made a name for itself in the large-scale book repair market. Dunn & Co.'s sister company, the Legacy Publishing Group, a wholesale manufacturer of unique stationary and gift items, has 60 full-time employees and 60,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Dunn & Co. and Legacy Publishing sell their products in all 50 states.

"Dunn & Co. differentiates itself from its competitors by offering higher efficiency and productivity for low-volume orders, quick turnaround times, and more advanced variable data capabilities - all of which are the core advantages of the Xeikon 8000," said Michael V. Ring, president of Xeikon America, Inc. "We're excited to partner with such an innovative player in the book printing space."

"Our technology enjoys a unique position in the market as it combines the best in productivity and imaging quality. Not only can our presses easily handle monthly volumes between 5 million and 10 million pages, they also offer an unparalleled imaging resolution of 1200 dpi," Ring adds.

The Xeikon 8000 runs at speeds of up to 275 letter-size pages per minute and can handle duty cycles up to 10 million pages per month. It handles paper stocks from 27 lb text (40 gsm) to122 lb cover (16-pt. board), providing a range of substrate options to its users. The Xeikon 8000 is also the only digital color press that prints on both sides of the substrate in a single pass (One-Pass-DuplexTM Technology). Furthermore, the Xeikon 8000 has no sheet or frame size restrictions. As a result, it can easily handle the production of oversized dust jackets and book covers.

Xeikon's X-800 Digital Front-End and QA-P toner technology deliver outstanding quality and cutting-edge workflow management tools for a streamlined book production workflow. Last but not least, the finishing options available with the Xeikon 8000 go a long way in the automated production of book blocks.
