Productivity & Profitability: How Choosing the Right Plates Can Make a Difference

Press release from the issuing company

Printers discuss metrics and transition costs when considering a change in plates in WhatTheyThink webinar, sponsored by Fujifilm

Lexington, Kentucky USA - WhatTheyThink.com today announced the opportunity for industry professionals to attend a free printing industry educational webinar. Productivity & Profitability: How Choosing the Right Printing Plates Can Make a Difference. The session will be led by WhatTheyThink Senior Editor Cary Sherburne and held Wednesday, February 23rd, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm EST (-5 GMT).

No-charge registration is available by visiting WhatTheyThink.com and selecting the Webinars tab.

“Selecting printing plates is not as simple as buying a ream of paper at the office supply store,” said Sherburne. “There are many other metrics to consider other than run lengths and cost per plate.  Three experienced printing executives will share their experiences with the transition costs of making a change versus the impact of a change on prepress and pressroom productivity, giving an end-to-end view of the impact of plates on overall productivity and profitability.”

Sherburne will be joined by:

  • Dean Mills, Plant Operations Director, Allen Press. Headquartered in Lawrence KS, Allen Press provides integrated services for scholarly journal and special-interest publication production.
  • Jeff Hernandez, Vice President, Classic Color. Located in suburban Chicago, Classic Color began as a prepress company but has evolved into a visual communications company with significant investments in digital workflows and printing equipment.
  • Todd Smith, Quality Director, Rose City Printing & Packaging. With operations in Vancouver WA and Gresham OR, RCPP is a mid-sized printer and converter with annual sales in excess of $37 million.

“Making a change in printing plates can have complex impact on printing and prepress operations, both positive and negative,” said Randy Davidson, President, WhatTheyThink. “This session will help attendees better understand whether new developments in plate technology make now a good time to investigate a transition strategy.  We are pleased the Fujifilm is sponsoring this event, allowing us to offer this important educational session to attendees at no cost.”

Attendees will be able to participate in a live question and answer session to get the most from the experience and will be able to view and listen to the presentation using a standard Internet browser with audio streamed via computer.

Discussion

I have worked with a few CtP plate manufacturers and am familiar with the design challenges so I look forward to this panel’s discussion.
CtP metal plates have been around since the 90's and there have been plenty of new technologies and manufacturers during that period. Survey current major manufacturers and it tells you how difficult it is to design and consistently deliver a quality product.
Talk to a small group of printers and there are big differences on how printers view CtP plate performance. These forums are excellent venues to ensure printers are objective in their CtP assessment of no preheat vs preheat plates, plate press chemistry resistance, the consistency of 20 micron printing, Violet vs thermal, chem free vs wet CtP, why is a newspaper CtP plate different from a commercial plate, the list goes on. I look forward to hearing the panel discuss plate performance criteria and their views of offshore products.
