Outstanding map printing with the ROLAND 900

Press release from the issuing company

Since 2001 the Ministry of Defense (MoD) Mapping Company has been carrying out the production and servicing profiles of military mapping in Hungary. It is a non-profit company established by the Minister of Defense on the base of the former military mapping institute.

The fundamental function of the company is to fulfill the state needs of the basic mapping tasks under the responsibility of the Ministry of Defense. Among the activities of the company with 160 employees (40 of them engaged in the printing business) the production and supply of state topographic maps, and military thematic maps and databases plays a major role. Founded in 1919 the Budapest printing house has preserved the very specific traditional map production for many years. With the four-color and six-color manroland sheetfed offset presses in formats of 700 x 1000 mm resp. 880 x 1260 mm the company meets the highest quality standards.

The tasks of outstanding importance of MoD Mapping Co. include maintenance of the Hungarian national topographic map system, supply of the Hungarian Defense Forces with printed maps, GIS (geographic information system) support of the Hungarian Defense Forces, production and maintenance of digital mapping databases, meeting the reproduction requirements of the MoD and the Defense Forces. The map production is based on digital mapping databases. Topographic and thematic elements of the maps are stored in digital databases created by means of GIS software in different vector formats. The content of a certain map is produced by the selection from the database of the needed elements according to the specification of the map. The selected elements are processed by cartographic software (symbolizing, scaling, coloring, etc.), which results in a vector graphic. The following procedure is adequate to the prepress color process. Since its establishment MoD Mapping Company has been working with manroland presses. That has turned out to be a very successful tradition. The six-color ROLAND 900 was purchased in 2002. Since 2003 it has been printing the following products on paper, cardboard and thermoplastic material: maps, atlases, posters (among them giant posters), books, booklets, brochures, periodical publications, 3D plastic maps etc. The company uses printcom blankets and it has a service contract ProServ Basic Plus for professional annual maintenance with manroland as well.
