“The third quarter of 2010 continued a welcome continuation of profitability for the industry,” said Dr. Webb. “The industry has had seven consecutive months of increased sales, but it's clear that the profits trend is increasing, but the long term sales trend is flat. The industry has had a shakeout of unprofitable businesses and the healthier businesses are benefiting.” Dr. Webb noted that the restructuring of the industry will be a continuing process in 2011 and beyond.

“These were the best profits since Q3 of 2007,” said Dr. Webb. “What's remarkable is that shipment levels at that time were almost 20% higher than they are today. This underscores the significant change in our industry. Profit levels are not close to historical norms, but the trend upward is encouraging.”

In the report, Dr. Webb reviews the latest trends in shipments, profits, and capacity measures for the industry. In this edition, he reviews the printing trends by state in terms of employment since 2005.
