Sunday Times debuts on the iPad using WoodWing´s Digital Magazine Tools

Press release from the issuing company

Zaandam, The Netherlands – WoodWing Software, a leading international supplier of cross-media publishing solutions and an innovation leader in the tablet publishing market, announced today that The Sunday Times is creating its feature-rich weekly iPad editions using WoodWing’s Digital Magazine Tools.

The Sunday Times is Britain’s biggest and best-selling quality newspaper. Its iPad edition not only offers all 12 sections and the full content of the printed newspaper; it has also been extensively enriched with videos, images, interactive graphics and tables, shopping options and much more, leveraging the features available in WoodWing’s Digital Magazine Tools. The Sunday Times provides different layouts for landscape and portrait mode.

Section-based download ensures comfortable handling of rich content
One of the key features of the app is that readers can download the newspaper section by section. The section page displays a virtual newsstand of all available sections, allowing readers to download the content of their interest. Using the new progressive download functionality provided by WoodWing´s Digital Magazine Tools, users can start reading almost instantly, while the download of the rest of the section continues in the background. Each section has its own individual cover, table of contents and page viewer.

John Witherow, editor of The Sunday Times, said, “This is the first time a multi-section newspaper has put everything onto an app, and lots of video and graphics bring The Sunday Times to life. We are proud to deliver a really beautiful reading experience for the iPad.”

The iPad editions of The Sunday Times include three very attractive magazines and a convenient radio and TV guide. Innovative navigation features like the headline scanner on the cover pages of news sections and the map-based access to worldwide news stories have been implemented. Readers can also contact the editors to comment on stories.

Granular purchasing options including subscription
The iPad editions of The Sunday Times are complimentary with the digital subscription of £2 per week, which includes access to The Times iPad Edition and Web sites (thetimes.co.uk, thesundaytimes.co.uk). It is also complimentary with a seven-day newspaper subscription. In addition, readers can purchase individual editions from within the app for £1.79.

“Media Systems has been proud to offer our expertise to help bring this project to fruition,” said Paul Driscoll, Publishing Director at Media Systems Ltd, one of WoodWing´s Gold Authorized Solution Partners in the UK. “The mixture of superb WoodWing functionality, Media Systems’ technical expertise and the imagination of the Sunday Times design team has resulted in a stunning and innovative app, one that we are delighted to help News International to launch.”

“The Sunday Times is an impressive example of how publishers can leverage their media brands to offer their readers extremely rich content in a compelling way,” said Erik Schut, President of WoodWing Software. “The teams at The Sunday Times and our partner Media Systems did a great job – reading The Sunday Times on the iPad is a stunning media experience that will easily keep you engaged all Sunday long.”
