Xerox Extends On-Demand Publishing Leadership With New Docutech Powerplus Series

Press release from the issuing company

CHICAGO, Sept. 29, 2003 – Xerox Corporation today extended its print-on-demand leadership by announcing the Xerox DocuTech PowerPlus Series, that enables print providers to cut total job costs by up to 25 percent and capture new revenue-generating, short-run publishing opportunities. The new DocuTech PowerPlus Series has the power of the five members of the DocuTech Production Publisher 6000 family, plus new capabilities to meet the specialized needs of print providers who produce books, manuals or stitched and perfect-bound booklets. These applications often require oversized stocks, pre-printed covers, variable information, and inserts on special papers. The new series meets these needs while permitting digital output to run through the same offline bindery and finishing systems used with offset printed output. This capability eliminates the need for additional investments in finishing systems, a requirement that, until now, has limited the ability of some offset publishers to use digital printers. The series can be used by a wide range of print providers including in-plant, commercial and quick printers. “This new DocuTech series fills a critical niche in the publishing world, enabling a broader range of digital printing services,” said Gil Hatch, president, Production Systems Group, Xerox Corporation. “These systems improve operational flexibility, broaden the range of book applications suited for digital production, and provide exceptional image quality.” The five models in the PowerPlus Series — the DocuTech 6100, 6115, 6135, 6155 and 6180 — range in speed from 96 pages per minute (ppm) to 180 ppm. Each provides the capability to print sheets as large as 18.5” x 14.3”, with an option for printing an extra large format of up to 19.2” x 14.3”, extending the standard DocuTech maximum of 17” x 14.3”. The larger sheets can lower production costs by up to 25 percent by permitting four-up, duplex 6” x 9” and 7” x 9” book or manual pages. To broaden paper-handling flexibility, a Xerox Interposer is included in all PowerPlus Series models. It provides for insertion of pre-printed stocks through two or three paper trays and enables DocuTechs to run third-party roll-feeding devices. To allow print providers better cost controls and improve billing, the new series comes standard with the Xerox Enhanced Accounting Reporter to generate customized, on-demand accounting information. Print operation managers can now automatically capture the specific accounting data they require for status checking and billing activities. There are also several image-quality controls in the latest release of the DocuTechs server software, Xerox DocuSP version 3.7 that is part of the Xerox FreeFlow Digital Workflow Collection. They include new adjustments that permit better matching to input quality and the capability to improve halftone images by selecting from additional line-screen settings of 125 and 140 lines per inch. DocuTech PowerPlus Series options include print engine modifications that enable printing on lightweight paper with weights as low as 13lb. to 16lb. bond or comparable offset press stocks. Lighter-weight paper reduces the thickness of manuals, policies and reference documents and can reduce postage and/or mailing costs by up to 45 percent. A climate-corrected registration option helps maintain front-to-back registration consistency in printing environments that experience wide fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Standard and optional configurations may vary in different regions worldwide. The Xerox DocuTech PowerPlus Series will be available in North America and Europe in October 2003. U.S. list prices range from $207,000 for the entry-level DocuTech 6100 to $429,600 for the flagship DocuTech 6180. Sales are exclusively through the Xerox direct sales force.
