PEOPLE Magazine created iPad app with new WoodWing Digital Magazine Tools

Press release from the issuing company

Zaandam, The Netherlands – WoodWing Software, one of the innovation leaders in cross-media publishing solutions, today announced that the iPad app for one of the most popular magazines in the U.S., the celebrity publication PEOPLE Magazine, was created using the new version 1.4 of WoodWing's Digital Magazine Tools, allowing for an outstanding reader experience.

Highest Degree of Interactivity
The PEOPLE Magazine experience on the iPad almost certainly offers the highest degree of interactivity seen in an iPad app yet. Hotspots are used extensively to show additional content such as text and images. The new version of WoodWing's Digital Magazine Tools also allows for one or more scrollable areas on a page, enabling the designers to integrate additional content in a reader-friendly manner. One example is the visual table of contents, teasing the stories in a very appealing fashion.

Navigation Made Easy
The app makes heavy use of the new navigation features offered by WoodWing's Digital Magazine Tools 1.4. A two-finger swipe switches to the next story instead of just the next page. A graphical page flipper with a scrubber and large thumbnails allow for easy orientation. Tapping on the outer edge on the left and right of a page moves backward or forward. When the bottom toolbar is visible, an icon in the upper left corner of the screen enables the reader to open a scrollable vertical table of contents.

Integrated E-Commerce Options
Many movie trailers and song samples are available to view and hear. E-commerce options are integrated in book and music reviews, enabling the reader to immediately buy the reviewed book or album directly from within the App.

iPad Editions Are Free for Subscribers
Subscribers of the printed issue of PEOPLE Magazine can access the iPad editions for free. Other readers can purchase single issues via iTunes. The WoodWing Reader app is able to handle both models.

A New Level of iPad Publishing
"The PEOPLE Magazine app pushes iPad publishing to a new level, setting a new standard for the industry," said Erik Schut, President of WoodWing Software. "We are delighted to be able to support PEOPLE Magazine with our Digital Magazine Tools to create such a stunning app."

Time Inc. already uses WoodWing's Digital Magazine Tools to create iPad apps for a number of their globally renowned publications, such as TIME, FORTUNE and SPORTS ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINES. "Each App created by Time Inc. reflects the specific character of the print publication on the iPad," Schut said. "That is possible because we provide publishers full control over both the page design, as well as the Reader app, allowing for a unique and branded experience."

WoodWing's Digital Magazine Tools for iPad support Adobe CS4 and CS5 and are in use by many renowned newspaper and magazine publishers around the globe.

The PEOPLE Magazine iPad App can be downloaded from the App Store.
