Global Graphics and PrismaTek lend GATF tools

Press release from the issuing company

Sewickley, PA; September 8, 2003 - Global Graphics Software, a leading developer and supplier of high-performance RIPs, PDF document, workflow and color solutions, has joined with PrismaTek, an experienced provider of systems integration services for the graphic arts market and US distributor of Jaws PDF Courier(TM) technology, to provide and implement the latest version of the electronic file delivery software as PrismaTek's PrintTHAT! system at the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (GATF). The PrintTHAT! implementation of Jaws PDF Courier with award-winning Enfocus Certified PDF Preflighting will be used by GATF for research, classroom instruction, and real-world testing of Internet-based PDF workflows. The new application gives GATF a simple and dependable mechanism to receive PDF files over the Internet that are produced to GATF's specifications. In addition to controlled PDF creation, PrintTHAT! also can automatically preflight PDF files prior to delivery. GATF operates a fully functioning print production facility providing crucial data for its research and a real-world environment for training and education. GATF print output devices range from an AB Dick platesetter and a Man Roland Rotoman, to Heidelberg and Komori sheet-fed presses, a Xerox DocuTech 6180 and a Heidelberg QM DI. Meets a Goal to Simplify PDF Creation "Print production today is a complex task. It's more difficult to create perfect PDF files for a particular workflow than most people realize," said Julie Shaffer, Director of the Robert Howard Center for Digital Imaging. "Even PDF files can have problems, like missing fonts or image data in RGB format intended for a CMYK workflow, that prevent proper printing. "We're excited about using PrintTHAT! because it's designed to let the content creator focus on designing the job, and let us control the technical aspects of electronic delivery and print production," said Shaffer. Jaws PDF Courier is an easily deployed software development kit (SDK) for customized creation and Internet-based delivery of documents in Portable Document Format. Its implementation as PrintTHAT! at GATF allows content creators to download and install PDF print drivers to their desktops in minutes from the GATF website and to send back secure PDF files geared to a particular workflow and created to GATF's unique specifications. It also places preflighting upstream, with the content creators, to ensure the PDF files sent to GATF can be printed. From Start to Finish in Two Weeks PrismaTek can deploy PrintTHAT! as a server-based system hosted by the print provider, or as a centrally managed file delivery service for customers who do not have the infrastructure or the desire to administer the software. PrismaTek installed PrintTHAT! here as a dedicated, server-based plug-and-play system branded with the GATF identity. The application for GATF is running on a dedicated Pentium III Xeon, Compaq Pro that PrismaTek is loaning to GATF. Global Graphics Software loaned the software licenses GATF will need to support its various workflows and users. The GATF configuration allows PrismaTek to set up new client drivers, provide routine maintenance and otherwise manage the PrintTHAT! server remotely from its offices in North Carolina. As testimony to its rapid implementation, PrismaTek built and configured PrintTHAT! for GATF from start to finish in less than two weeks, including print drivers to GATF's specifications for its lithographic and on-demand workflows. Mallard and PrintTHAT! partner Butch Porcaro personally installed the system at GATF on a Sunday and they trained key GATF staff members in its use in a few hours the next day. "We believe Jaws PDF Courier software reflects the state-of-the-art in prepress automation because it makes print production reliable and predictable," said Mallard. "PrismaTek is pleased to provide GATF the opportunity to thoroughly test that potential in our PrintTHAT! application in one of the most rigorous and independent forums available to the graphic communications industry." "Global Graphics is honored to have been invited by GATF to demonstrate firsthand the utility of our Jaws PDF Courier technology. GATF's experience with the PrintTHAT! application will help educate printers throughout the industry on tools and approaches they can use to make their lives simpler," remarked Ralph Lloyd, Vice President of Product Marketing, Global Graphics Software.
