Dever Frankian Recognized for Sustainability Initiatives in Work for OSRAM SYLVANIA

Press release from the issuing company

[Cohoes, NY] – Massachusetts-based Dever Frankian Advertising Communications and OSRAM SYLVANIA have been recognized for their recent sustainability initiatives by Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. Dever Frankian’s recent work for client OSRAM SYLVANIA has earned each of the companies the Mohawk Windpower Partnership Award for their contribution to helping reduce the carbon footprint of the world. Dever Frankian recently chose a special make of Mohawk 50/10 manufactured with wind-generated electricity for use in the production of OSRAM SYLVANIA’s new product brochure, A Guide to Sustainable Lighting Solutions. “Dever Frankian and OSRAM SYLVANIA are contributing to a significant movement among businesses of all sizes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Their specification of Mohawk 50/10 made with wind-generated electricity is step to correcting and protecting our environment for the future,” says Joseph O’Connor, Sr. Vice President Sales, Corporate Accounts. “Never let it be said that no single action can make an impact. Progress will truly be made by customers who are willing to try, one project at a time,” he added. The difference Dever Frankian and OSRAM SYLVANIA have made is significant, as evidenced by the table below, which quantifies the results of their decision to use Mohawk 50/10 made with renewable wind-generated electricity. These results are also displayed on the back cover of A Guide to Sustainable Lighting Solutions. ENVIRONMENTAL SAVINGS ACHIEVED BY DEVER FRANKIAN AND OSRAM SYLVANIA 20,480 pounds - 15 % PCW Mohawk 50/10 - manufactured with wind-generated electricity. Savings derived from using post-consumer recycled fiber in lieu of virgin fiber: 25.68 trees not cut down 2,376 lbs. atmospheric emissions eliminated 1,207 lbs. solid waste not generated 10,908 gallons water/wastewater flow saved 18,189,150 BTUs energy not consumed 74.15 lbs. waterborne waste not created Savings derived from choosing a paper from Mohawk's Windpower Portfolio: 9,407 lbs. air emissions (CO2, SO2 and NOX) not generated The fossil fuel equivalent for this amount of wind energy: 4 barrels crude oil or 3 tons coal (anthracite) This amount of wind energy is equivalent to: Planting 639 trees or taking one car off the road for approximately 10,240 miles Through Mohawk’s current purchase level of 45mm kilowatt hours of wind-generated electricity, it has offset 33,000 tons of CO2 which would have ended up in our atmosphere. “In addition, customer specification of high recycled content paper has driven a dramatic shift in fiber use at Mohawk, with the increased use of postconsumer waste taking pressure off forest resources and reducing CO2 emissions.” says O’Connor. The Mohawk Windpower Partnership Award was launched nationally in 2006. This is one of many programs launched by Mohawk to raise awareness for corporate sustainability issues. A pioneer on the recycled front, in 2003, Mohawk became the first paper mill in the US to use renewable, non-polluting wind-generated electricity for manufacturing. Mohawk’s environmental calculator is another industry first: this online, interactive tool enables customers to calculate the savings achieved when they choose environmentally friendly paper. Mohawk is also the first US paper mill to offer Green Seal-certified papers and continues to offer the widest variety of Green Seal-certified papers available from one mill. Finally, Mohawk received the EPAs Green Power Leadership Award last year in 2005.
