Courier Gains Triple Certification

Press release from the issuing company

NORTH CHELMSFORD, Mass. -- Courier Corporation, one of America's leading book manufacturers and specialty publishers, has been awarded Chain-of-Custody certification by two leading environmental organizations, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forestry Certification (PEFC). This new dual certification complements the company's existing certification by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and marks Courier as "triple certified" for its systematic adherence to environmentally responsible practices in the use of paper and other forest products throughout its five manufacturing locations. Courier's triple certification reinforces the company's position as an environmental leader at a time of increasing consumer demand for greener products and business practices.

"We have already established ourselves as a leader in bringing earth-friendly books to today's environmentally conscious consumers," said James F. Conway III, Courier's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "With our combination of all-digital workflow, advanced prepress systems and state-of-the-art printing and binding technology, we are one of the cleanest and most efficient manufacturers in the industry. In addition, our publishing businesses have been vigorous advocates for environmental responsibility through our Green Editions book labeling program and have enjoyed significant success with titles addressing important environmental issues. Triple certification by the FSC, SFI and PEFC further strengthens our credentials in this marketplace while enabling us to meet the requirements of a growing range of publishers, both domestically and internationally."

Cost-effective solutions for greener books

"Readers are increasingly seeking out books produced from green materials," said Mr. Conway. "Where and how the books are made also has a crucial effect on their environmental footprint. As a U.S. manufacturer, we are not only geographically close to our customers, but used to meeting strict environmental standards throughout our operations. With our combination of the right equipment, the right practices and the right papers, publishers and retailers can meet the demand for greener books reliably and economically. Our experience and practical approach are especially valuable in the current economy, where doing the right thing at a reasonable cost is paramount.

"Triple certification helps us to extend our service leadership by offering customers a greater choice of certified paper sources. At the same time, it broadens the appeal of our Green Editions program, which enables our customers to showcase their commitment to higher environmental standards in a manner that captures consumers' attention. In just one year, our Green Editions symbol has appeared on more than 400 titles from publishers of all sizes. To learn more, go to www.greenedition.org.

"Finally, let's not forget the larger purpose of certification, which is to protect the world's forests, wildlife and the rights of indigenous peoples through responsible industry practices. We will continue to seek out innovative ways to serve readers, retailers and publishers while protecting and preserving the environment. We firmly believe that success in today's economy can be combined with environmental practices that ensure long-term benefits for everyone."
