Presstek 52DI Enables Universal Lithographers to Expand Business and Increase Customer Retention

Press release from the issuing company

HUDSON, N.H., Oct. 17 -- Presstek, Inc., the leading manufacturer and marketer of digital offset printing business solutions, today announced that Universal Lithographers Inc., a leading commercial printer in Sheboygan, Wis., has installed a Presstek 52DI digital offset press. After a comprehensive evaluation of digital printing options, Universal selected Presstek's 52DI to profitably meet demand for short-run, high-quality printing and sustain the company's core competencies.
Universal Lithographers is a 42-person print shop that produces high-end graphics for major Midwestern manufacturers, insurance companies, financial institutions, and advertising and design firms. The company installed a Presstek 52DI press to accomplish four specific business objectives: increase customer retention, develop new business opportunities, support customer in- plant jobs and fulfill printing requirements from the company's Web store. Operating with its traditional offset press, Universal often had to outsource or turn down customers' requests for shorter print runs, which sometimes resulted in a financial loss.
"Universal produces high-end, complex and demanding work for a variety of customers," said Jerry Keller, vice president of Universal Lithographers. "We looked at all of the toner-based products and ultimately decided that Presstek's 52DI was the best match for our core competencies - delivering high-quality printing quickly. We now profitably produce fast-turn, short-run jobs, from 250 to 15,000 impressions, helping us retain customers."
With the Presstek 52DI, Universal can better meet its customers' requests, including the increased demand for short-run marketing materials. Additionally, the 52DI has allowed Universal to build trust with new and larger customers by initially delivering high-quality smaller jobs. The quality of the DI press also allows Universal to capture overflow work from in-plant print shops that need to meet the stringent quality demands of marketing departments as well as the high quality standards of its own Web store customers.
Universal Lithographers joins an increasing number of mid-size printers who are adopting Presstek solutions to become more capable, profitable and competitive. With more than 3,000 Direct Imaging (DI) systems installed worldwide, Presstek provides print shops of all sizes with high-quality, cost- effective, environmentally friendly and easy-to-use printing solutions.
"Universal Lithographers is a great example of a mid-size printer who is looking to improve its capability by implementing the Presstek 52DI digital offset press," said Emile Tabassi, vice president of North American sales for Presstek. "We are committed to helping printers like Universal Lithographers boost their profitability and competitiveness by expanding their capabilities to meet the myriad demands of their customers."
Since the introduction of the first DI press, Presstek has continued to apply innovative advances to the imaging, plate and press design in DI presses, creating an optimized offset printing solution that produces exceptional quality, while improving speed, reliability and overall price performance. The latest generation DI press, the Presstek 52DI, images all four plates simultaneously on-press in precise register and outputs a 16 micron spot with automated support for 300 lpi and FM screening. In addition, it automatically adjusts the amount of ink according to the image on each plate. All of this results in very high-quality output and a makeready time significantly faster than other offset printing processes. File-to-sellable printing sheet occurs in 10 minutes, and the DI prints up to 10,000 impressions per hour with a maximum image area of 20.07 x 14.17 inches per sheet -- one of the largest print areas available in its class.
