More Wind Mills Power Mohawk Fine Papers Inc.

Press release from the issuing company

[Cohoes, NY] – April 12, 2007 - Committed to sustainability and demonstrating leadership by voluntarily purchasing green power, Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. became an early leader in the use of wind-generated electricity for manufacturing. Mohawk was recognized for its leadership as a National Green Power Award Winner in 2005. As of March 1, 2007, Mohawk Fine Papers has increased its purchase of wind-generated electricity RECs from 45,000,000 kWh to 60,000,000 kWh annually. This is approximately 60% of all of the electric energy used for all of Mohawk’s manufacturing, converting and distribution operations. Mohawk Fine Papers and its mills were the first in the U.S. to use wind-generated energy to manufacture paper. With many of its corporate customers seeking ways to mitigate their impacts on the environment and looking for innovative ways to highlight their socially responsible actions, Mohawk responded by developing a complete portfolio of papers manufactured with non-polluting, wind-generated electricity from wind farms in upstate New York and Pennsylvania. According to George Milner, Mohawk’s Senior Vice President, Energy, Environmental and Government Affairs, wind-generated energy now offsets 60% of the electric power required for all of our operations in New York and Ohio. “Windpower is the future of renewable energy,” notes Milner, “Yes, our customers find ‘sustainable papers’ a tangible way to express their own commitment to sustainability but the larger idea is to stabilize energy costs and to do so in a socially responsible manner. The cost of electricity is going up 4-5% per year because much of it is made with fossil fuels. When you build a wind farm, the only future costs are maintenance.” According to Thomas D. O’Connor, Jr., Mohawk’s Chairman and CEO, “Our commitment to environmental excellence has propelled us to where we are today. Response to our approach has opened up new markets with customers committed to preserving the earth’s natural resources. Mohawk is proving that businesses can be profitable and environmentally responsible at the same time.”
