August 28, 2007 -- ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. -- Screen (USA) will emphasize four decades of leadership in serving the North American graphic communications industry by showcasing prepress, workflow and printing technologies at this year's Graph Expo that represent the pinnacle of innovative research and development. The year 2007 marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of Screen (USA) as the first overseas subsidiary of Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co., Ltd., and the Screen booth (#3801) will show visitors how Screen digital solutions continue to revolutionize prepress and print production.
At 9:30 a.m. on September 10, Screen representatives will hold a press conference in the McCormick Place tradeshow booth. Topics to be discussed include highlights from the U.S. organization's anniversary year, product introductions, Screen's digital printing strategy and the delivery of the 11,111th Screen computer-to-plate (CTP) recorder.
"Screen has sold more CTP devices worldwide than any other manufacturer in the graphics industry," observed Mike Fox, president of Screen (USA). "That is due to the fact that printing companies of all sizes and capabilities can find the best fit for their production volume in the PlateRite series. Screen's advanced automation solutions allow them to achieve maximum performance and efficiency."
Reliable CTP production
At the tradeshow, Screen (USA) will demonstrate the flagship models from the six-up, eight-up and very large format PlateRite series thermal CTP. The PlateRite series boasts the widest range of plate format support, from two-up to 36-up,  as well as versatile configurations and industry-leading automation.
The PlateRite 6600S provides increased prepress flexibility for six-page web and sheetfed presses. It is capable of imaging plates from 12.8 x 14.6 inches to 38.5 x 26.9 inches (with a smaller plate size of 12 x 14.6 inches optionally available). The PlateRite 6600S has a 64-channel imaging head and produces 30 plates per hour.
The PlateRite 8800Z offers fast, reliable output of eight-up plates, making it the perfect tool for the most advanced digital workflows. Standard resolutions are 1,200, 2,400, 2,438 and 2,540 dpi, with an option for resolutions up to 4,000 dpi. The PlateRite 8800Z handles plate sizes from 12 x 14.6 inches to 45.6 x 37 inches. It outputs 42 plates per hour when using a 40.5 x 31.4-inch plate and 2,400 dpi resolution.
The PlateRite Ultima 36000ZX is the ideal platesetter for supplying high-quality thermal plates to jumbo-size sheetfed presses and high-output web presses. Multi-channel lasers based on Grating Light Valve technology ensure stunning productivity. The PlateRite Ultima 36000ZX accommodates plates from 25.6 x 21.7 inches to 82.6 x 62.9 inches and can image 23 80 x 50-inch plates every hour.
Furthermore, to meet the needs of narrow web and package printing, Screen (USA) will demonstrate the PlateRite FX870. The platesetter precisely images digital flexographic and letterpress plates. It features new technologies for resin plate mounting. It delivers predictable results in highlight and shadow areas and enhances production of labels, flexible packaging, corrugated, carton and security printing. Additionally, the PlateRite FX870 offers the option of imaging offset plates. The platesetter outputs 7.9 x 7.9-inch to 34.25 x 30-inch offset plates at the rate of 10 plates per hour.
Digital printing developments
As part of Screen's ongoing commitment to digital printing, the Truepress 344 and Truepress Jet520 will both make return appearances at this year's Graph Expo.
Truepress 344 is a compact, highly automated four-color direct imaging press for prepress and printing companies moving to high-quality on-demand supply of printed material. It utilizes a multi-array laser diode system and processless thermal plates. It images at 2,400 dpi resolution and prints with the conventional offset process with standard inks and water. Job changeover times are less than six minutes.
The Truepress Jet520 is a continuous-feed, single-pass variable data inkjet printer for full-color transactional and direct mail printing. With a print speed of 209.9 feet per minute or 50,000 impressions per hour, the Truepress Jet520 excels at high-speed and high-volume print runs. The roll-fed paper feeding system provides nonstop operation. At Graph Expo 2007, the Truepress Jet520 will be configured as a single-engine duplex running as a half web.
Screen will unveil Varystudio, a new variable data software developed to maximize the performance of the Truepress Jet520. Offering flexible page layouts and easy desktop publishing operation, Varystudio streamlines transactional printing, direct mail and one-to-one marketing. Other printing applications that benefit from Varystudio's enhanced workflow are manuals, financial reports, personalized materials for education and short-run local newspapers.
Unique workflow solutions
On the workflow side, Graph Expo will serve as the premiere for Trueflow SE. Trueflow SE implements the Adobe(R) PDF Print Engine to provide the total workflow solution throughout input to output. This new universal workflow enables multiple output devices, such as Screen PlateRite platesetters, Screen Truepress digital printing systems and print-on-demand color printers, to be selected and used on demand. One workflow application drives the different output systems.
JobArchiver is an easy-to-use option for storing, retrieving and restoring completed Trueflow jobs. JobArchiver runs on the Trueflow platform. It adds flexible storage of completed jobs, including PostScript, PDF, Dot TIFF and EPS files, templates and signatures. JobArchiver also has offline search, retrieve and restore capabilities, as well as a scheduling feature.
Current workflow solutions within Screen's Trueflownet JDF-enabled operating environment to be demonstrated include Riteapprove SE, an integrated online job approval function for Trueflow. Riteapprove SE improves the customer's experience during the approval process, as well as streamlining the production process. It provides 24/7 convenience for the customer to communicate with the printer for production approval. After the customer is done with the approval process, Riteapprove SE automatically sends approval status to Trueflow SE so that the rest of the production process can continue without delay.
The Screen booth will feature the popular Riteportal SE web-to-print solution. Riteportal SE affords print buyers certified PDF creation, preflight check and online job submission capabilities. Riteportal SE automates the delivery of the uploaded job content directly to Trueflow SE, making it easier for the customer to do business with the printer.
Booth visitors also can see LabProof SE, Screen's digital color proof application, and Riteinspect, which streamlines imposition inspection at both the prepress and plate-making sites.
