At OnDemand, Muller Martini and Oce to demonstrate the productivity and flexibility of in-line digital book manufacturing

Press release from the issuing company

4/11/07 -- Hauppauge, New York – As digital book production continues to evolve, so does the need for equipment with greater productivity and flexibility. Attendees to this year’s OnDemand Conference & Exposition can see how far the benefits of in-line digital book manufacturing can take their businesses by visiting the Océ booth, #1229. Partnering at the booth will be two of today’s leading innovators in digital book manufacturing: Muller Martini and Océ. Muller Martini will feature the next generation of its SigmaLine OnDemand technology and Océ will be highlighting its new and powerful VarioStream® continuous feed printing system. During the show, the two companies will demonstrate a complete in-line book printing and print finishing system configured to optimize versatility in two distinct ways. The line will consist of Océ VarioStream 7000 series continuous feed duplex printers running into an IBIS Smartbinder saddle stitcher as one delivery option, and, also running into a Muller Martini SigmaBinder perfect binder via a Shuttleworth conveyor as another delivery option. Also part of the line will be the compact SigmaTower cooling tower and the newly designed SigmaTrimmer. “The OnDemand marketplace is becoming increasingly focused on agility, having the ability to adapt quickly to just about any customer request...and printers and binderies who have the technology to offer their customers more production options are giving themselves more opportunities to expand their sales and profits,” says Andrew J. Fetherman, Manager, OnDemand Solutions Division, Muller Martini. “SigmaLine is all about flexibility, how and when you need it. And when combined with today’s cutting-edge printing solutions such as the Océ VarioStream 7000 family of digital printers, SigmaLine can meet an almost limitless range of digital book manufacturing needs, delivering commercial quality finishing in the fastest and most cost-effective ways possible.” Further underscoring the flexibility of the technology that Muller Martini will exhibit at the OnDemand expo is the fact that the in-line system, which will be demonstrated can also be run near-line. “For example, when saddle-stitched products are being produced in-line, you can simultaneously hand-feed the measuring station of the SigmaBinder with book blocks,” continues Mr. Fetherman. “This allows you to reap the benefits of in-line efficiencies when the complete line is running, while always having the added advantage of near-line capabilities when you need it.” Muller Martini’s SigmaBinder produces perfect-bound books at up to 1,000 fully variable-sized copies per hour, with hotmelt utilized for separate spine and side gluing. SigmaTower ensures proper cooling of perfect-bound books and optimal curing of the adhesives. SigmaTrimmer utilizes a new, patented swing-cut principle with three independently driven knife elements, automatically trimming books of varying sizes and thickness. SigmaBinder, SigmaTower and SigmaTrimmer are components of the modular and scaleable SigmaLine OnDemand book manufacturing solution, which in addition to perfect binding and trimming also offers the capability for continuous-feed printing, folding and collating. The OnDemand Exposition will be held April 17-19, 2007 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Visitors to Océ booth #1229 can view demonstrations of a complete in-line book manufacturing system featuring today’s most advanced digital production technology. OnDemand experts from both Muller Martini and Océ will be available at the booth throughout the show to explain the many ways in which next-generation digital manufacturing solutions can bring high efficiency, new sales opportunities and increased profit potential to operations large and small.
