Courier Announces FSC Certification

Press release from the issuing company

NORTH CHELMSFORD, Mass. Feb. 26, 2008 -- Courier Corporation, one of America's leading book manufacturers and specialty publishers, today announced that it has achieved Forest Stewardship Council(TM) (FSC) Chain-of-Custody certification in recognition of its commitment to responsible forestry practices and adherence to "green" manufacturing standards. As a result, Courier is now authorized to display the FSC label and Rainforest Alliance Certified(TM) (RAC) seal on products and promotional materials. These symbols provide assurance to publishers, retailers and readers that books printed on FSC papers originate from well-managed, legally harvested raw materials. Their use will also symbolize Courier's leadership in responding to consumer demand for earth-friendly products and services.

"For years Courier has worked hard to produce outstanding books in an environmentally responsible manner," said James F. Conway III, Courier's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "With all-digital workflow, advanced prepress systems and six interoperable plants, we are one of the cleanest and most efficient manufacturers in the industry. FSC Chain-of-Custody certification reinforces our customers' awareness that we are not only committed to high environmental standards, but living up to them."

Making greener books a reality

"Readers are increasingly seeking out books produced from green materials," said Mr. Conway. "Publishers and retailers need to be able to meet this demand reliably and economically. Courier stands ready to help, with state-of-the-art facilities and extensive experience with green manufacturing. We combine high-capacity one-to-four-color printing with a full array of cover, binding and finishing options. Equally important, our people are knowledgeable about the practicalities of making books greener every step of the way. In addition, our manufacturing plants are all here in the United States, where they meet strict environmental standards while enabling customers to reach U.S. markets quickly with no international shipping.

"We are delighted to join with others in serving today's and tomorrow's consumers while protecting and preserving the environment for future generations. Both as publisher and as book manufacturer, we will continue to be in the vanguard of responsible environmental practice."
