Hagadone Newspapers' Coeur d'Alene Press Choses Fusion Workflow ESP to Automate Prepress

Press release from the issuing company

August 14, 2007. Portland, OR -- Fusion Systems International today announced that Hagadone Newspapers' Coeur d'Alene Press in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, has chosen Fusion Systems' Workflow ESP to automate their prepress production workflow for the daily newspaper, Sunday paper, and special editions.
As early as last year, Coeur d'Alene (CDA) Press managers and upper management knew they needed an automated prepress workflow system that would be able to handle their completely new printing operation, which includes a new ECRM CTP device, custom CIP3 ink keying and five GOSS Magnum web towers, with a Quadtech Autotron Register Guidance system.
CIP3 integration, press-accurate proofs, and full automation were key factors that swayed CDA Press's choice of workflow. The Fusion Workflow ESP™ ROOM-based workflow now sits at the heart of that completely new printing operation, helping the Coeur d'Alene Press produce their daily newspaper, Sunday paper, as well as special sections for different editions.
Press-Accurate Proofing Catches Mistakes Before Imaging
Fusion Systems' unique DotLock™ proofing technology generates press-accurate proofs with the same RIPped data, and at the same time, as the high-resolution plating data files. As pages are RIP'd, thumbnails are automatically posted to an embedded Web server that is accessible to production, advertising and editorial staff. The Website automatically organizes thumbnails by publication date and section. And a simple click on a thumbnail icon opens a post-RIP color composite PDF image that has been generated from the plate separations.
With Workflow ESP in place, CDA Press can RIP and proof individual pages early on, prior to page-pairing. This allows them to catch and correct mistakes very early in the production process, since the proofs they see on screen or on paper are made directly from the same dots that image onto the printing plate.
Automation through Dynamic Job Routing
Fusion Systems is also assisting CDA Press with a phased implementation of automation for their daily and tab publications. Automation is achieved through Fusion's Dynamic Job Routing™ in conjunction with the DynaGram Automate software. Dynamic Job Routing uses sophisticated filtering algorithms to route fully RIP'd individual page files into automated imposition or page pairing queues where Automate pairs pages as they are available.
CIP3 Ensures Color Accuracy on Press
As part of the workflow implementation, Fusion Systems worked closely with GOSS engineers to customize and automate the creation of CIP3 PPF output to the new GOSS GWC-NP ink keying system. Fusion Systems has the only Harlequin RIP CIP3 implementation that is able to achieve this level of automation with the new GOSS system.
